A travel picture quiz posted by the UK’s The Guardian website in one of its question said Eelam is an indigenous name for Sri Lanka.

The Travel quiz was themed "do you know your islands, Man Friday?" and seen posted today.

The quiz description was, "From the Hebrides to Antipodes … how are you on islands, isles and islets – archipelago-go-go or just no-no-no?.

As its second question, the quiz asked, "Eelam is an indigenous name for which popular holiday island?

The four options to select from were, Isle of Man, Sri Lanka, Bali and Mauritius respectively.

Once the answer Sri Lanka is selected, it showed a further description which said, “The full name of the island's recent militant insurgency was LTTE - Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam."

The first question was about the size of the Great Britain.

Pathetic. Whoever did the questions should be sacked

Mahesh Mendis Friday, 15 May 2020 11:47 PM

Instead of foolishly worrying about this quiz, we should ask ourselves, which country in the 70s financed, armed, and trained the LTTE thus wrecking our country for the next thirty years .

    who own the Guardian?

    jayt Saturday, 16 May 2020 12:01 AM

At the same time, Guardian knows who created corona virus? Are they Tamil Tigers' supporters?

    FactChecker Saturday, 16 May 2020 12:29 AM

Actually, the Guardian is correct. Eelam (or, more accurately, Eezham) has historically been a Tamil word for Sri Lanka (as a whole). As an example, a Sri Lankan poet who was extant some 1700 years ago (at least) was known as "Eelattu Poothanthevanar".

if the majority cannot accept a simple fact like this, how would minorities trust have equal rights in this country?

Lionel Bopage Saturday, 16 May 2020 05:46 PM

Tamil Eelam (தமிழீழம்) is a derivative of the ancient and native Tamil name for Lanka, Eelam (ஈழம்). The part in the north and east of Sri Lanka, Tamil militants sought to create their separate state was called Tamil Eelam. create. The name is derived from the ancient Tamil name for Sri Lanka, Eelam. Militant Tamil movements who fought for a separate state in the north and east of Sri Lanka used “Tamil Eelam” in the names of their organisations. For example: LTTE - Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam PLOTE - People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam TELA – Tamil Eelam Liberation Army TELF – Tamil Eelam Liberation Front TELO - Tamil Eelam Liberation Organization Other organisations that did not adopt separatist tendencies used the name “Eelam”, and did not mean a separate state. Foe example: ENDLF - Eelam National Democratic Liberation Front ENDLF – Eelam National Democratic Liberation Front EPDP - Eelam People's Democratic Party EPRLF - Eelam People's Revolutionary Liberation F

I too thought 'Ealam' was a historical Tamil name for 'Lanka', whereas 'Thamil Ealam' was the separate State sought to be created by the LTTE. Ranil

It not one country but many countries. it is same with every part of the world. Best solution, I offered to Sri lanka commutes to begin a hearing. This is the best civilised solution to the public in the west where never ending wars are created. This way public will knows what the did not know and will have access to know what they never had access to. IN Sri lanka, finally will how their country have been run by foreign spies and how they bribe the local leaders and every thing to the public. Sinhalese who never practice actual democratic system of asking, grilling or prosecuting corrupted local leaders or never experienced putting a local leader into jail will be a big nightmare for me to ask or push Sri lanka communities in US, Canada, Europe or elsewhere to go for a hearing or public inquiry..

Not only UK, When Tamil crowd grow into million, Tamil Tigers will throw white Canadian into Atlantic ocean. Tamil Nadu cannot fight the Indian government, so, they are looking largest place and Tamil Tigers found Canada is the ideal place to breed another 100 million Tamil. Toronto already have "Tamil area".
