Two Police constables have been arrested by the STF for possession of 42 cartons of illicit cigarettes, which have a street value of over half a million of rupees, in Colombo Fort yesterday.
The STF said the raid was conducted near the Junior Police Officers Mess in Pettah following an intelligence tip-off.
Investigations revealed a constable attached to the Colombo Harbour Police and a constable driver of Police Kennels Unit at Colombo harbour were transporting illegally imported 8,400 cigarettes.
The STF also seized a van which was allegedly used in transporting the contraband. It was revealed that the van belonged to the Colombo Harbour Police Kennels Unit.
The suspects were handed over to the Colombo Fort Police. (DSB)

The CID and the STF are very good at catching stuff that goes up in smoke. But the C.B crooks who manages to spirit a way with billions of Rupees goes marching by. And the ordinary people of our country suffer because the main Bank is empty.
