The main suspect in the case of throwing parcels containing contraband into the Welikada Magazine Prison has been arrested today.
Police said the suspect was arrested by the Borella Police this morning with 10 grammes of heroin, three mobile phones, six mobile phone batteries, a hand-free set and 110 grams of tobacco.
Investigations revealed that the suspect had operated a team of 11 individuals to throw parcels into the prison.
Police said a total of nine suspects of the team were already taken into the custody.
The arrested, a 32-year-old man, was identified as a resident of Borella.
Meanwhile, Prison Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said that Prison and the Police officers are jointly conducting an operation to nab those who were involved in throwing parcels containing illegal contraband into the prisons.
He said at least 15 suspects were remanded earlier for throwing parcels into the Kalutara Prison while seven suspects were arrested for throwing parcels into the Negombo Prison.
He said at least 30 parcels were recovered by the prisons officers at the Negombo Prison when those parcels were thrown over the prison wall previously.

They keep on throwing and others keep on arresting, but there is no system to prevent this practice. The best thing will be to clear the area around the prison and declare it a restricted security zone and resettle them elsewhere.

Give him a taste of the inside so he will know what it's like to do such things.
