Joint Opposition MP Dinesh Gunawardane said today that State Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe, who criticised the conduct of the President at a press conference on Tuesday, had violated the Standing Orders and the Constitution by doing so.

He said the Constitution and the Standing Order 78 had provided clear guidance with regard to the conduct of the President.

"Mr. Senasinghe had made a statement criticising the President during a press conference. It was a violation of the Standing Orders and the Constitution to criticise the President and the country," he said.

Mr. Gunawardane requested Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to look into the matter adding that allowing to do so, would lead to the violation of SOs and the Constitution in future.

The Speaker informed Parliament that he would look into it.

MP Ranjith Zoysa said the statement made by the State Minister was undermining the Presidential Commission appointed by the President to look into the issuance of Central Bank Bonds. (Ajith Siriwardana)

What about shouting in the Parliament by JO and only when some one speaks the truth they get worried. Its interesting to see this joker is now trying to butter up the President. Has there been a deal between the two SLFP groups?

I agree with Hon. Dinesh Gunawardane about this MP Senesinghe. Also with all other people of Sri Lanka who has spoken about the same subject matter. He claims to be honest but just the opposite. Untrustworthy. Not fit to be in the Parliament.

Totally agree. Sujeewa should resign from his MP post as he has violated the basic principal we voted for Yahapalanaya. That is to eliminate corruption and a new constitution.

This type of standing orders make politicians bold to do wrong things. Constructive criticisms are good. But if the criticisms are for the sole purpose of escaping from corruption charges as in the case of this State Minister, then it's problematic. Why not this minister resign from the Cabinet?

Standing orders dont apply outside parliament. Anybody is free to critizise President's actions

I do not condone Sujeeva's conduct in Parliament. How ever if Sujeeva violated Standing Orders that should have been raised at the time. Was Dinesh dozing off at the time after a taxpayer funded heavy meal?

I have my doubts about the application of Standing Orders for the conduct of MPs out side the Parliament. What I can see is he has no right to criticize the appointment of Commission as it is a request of the Govt made just after the COPE report was put out. Govt thought that it was the best to cover it off but the modus operandi has misfired.Sorry, now it is too late. Ammude gahanakota ekkak eliye thyala gahanna epa
