Government will, within the next 30 days, take a final decision on the future of the country’s national carrier, Srilankan, informed sources said yesterday.

They said the government would decide whether to covert Srilankan into a public-private- partnership, a State-owned venture or to privatize it and would reveal its decisions by way of a public statement on July 30,”

The sources said the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had also instructed the government to take a decision soon.

This comes amid the previous disclosure that some airlines have had informal talks with the Sri Lankan Government on partnering the national carrier. Government had also said that it was considering operating the airline on the basis of a public-private-partnership so that it would be turned into a profit-making venture. (Yohan Perera)

For a government that cannot run a country properly irrespective of the ruling party, who can they manage an airline? These guys just fell on their knees to the private bus drivers!

This has happened because of corruption. There is nothing else but CORRUPTION. The Govt. cannot make any profit until people learn to be honest. The more money you put into it the more the corruption will spread. There are only two options, either close it down or be very strict on corruption if you want to keep it.

Rubbish! Cannot close it down. Thousands will be unemployed! Sell it on the buyers terms. White elephant no one wants. Disaster!

    Sunil Friday, 30 June 2017 08:15 AM

Srilankan airlines was for quite a long time a lucrative gold mine for henchmen of successive governments. If it cannot be made profitable, it is best to close it down without taxing the people any further for its sins.

Enough is enough waste of public money. Sri Lankan is not Rajapakse's or Sirisena's grandmother's property but precious public money being wasted. Close the blooming white elephant and channel such funds towards education, road development, improving power grids, medical and health etc...

This government to make a decision?? That will be something to look forward to. Better obtain prior approval of GMOA as they govern the country now.

ALL THIS HEADACHE IS ON THE PRESENT GOVT. IF WE HAD CONTINUED WITH EMIRATES, WE WOULD NOT HAVE TO FACE THE LOSSES

why we need an air line, spen money on Publick transport and roads, less than .0001 % sri lankans use this and it is more expensive than other air lines , this is a haven for all the crooks

Why only fire the top guys. There are plenty of rotten apples within the airline and the catering arm. Most of them are dead wood, liability's and past there prime. Get rid of all these useless follows.

Best bet is a private public partnership with SL Government holding 51%. Better to have a Sri Lankan company take over than a foreign party.

    TJ Friday, 30 June 2017 01:35 PM

It can still be revived as a profitable venture if the government realizes that they need top civil servant

Kingsley Wijesinhe Saturday, 01 July 2017 08:20 AM

I thought a "decisive decision" was to be taken last week? Why does the government need time till 30th July to decide? In the meantime, why not fire the garment factory director and the tired old retired pilot and appoint a properly qualified Chairman and a properly qualified CEO?

    Amir Friday, 30 June 2017 02:28 PM

Close the airline once and for all. Allow international carriers more flights in and out of Sri Lanka. It is sad but we have no alternative. You can ask MR and his family to take over the airline free of charge and run it.

    Dee Friday, 30 June 2017 02:31 PM

Privatise it or Close it down. Nothing to loose no assets. Only liabilities.

    KrishniI Friday, 30 June 2017 02:47 PM

PRIVATIZE IT!! Its the only solution... Nothing state owned/run in this country goes right, best is to privatize everything.. Including the universities and hospitals!

    mnsmart Friday, 30 June 2017 03:00 PM

Hand over to Gamunu Wijeratne, he will run it at a profit for sure

    RK Friday, 30 June 2017 03:19 PM

It is not a good idea to close down because that money will definitely be used elsewhere because it will go to the pockets of ministers. If I just recollect, sometime back wee had a many decade long civil war and about 40% of the budget was spent on the war. So it is logical that when the war stops, the 40% can be saved and used on other useful matters, but what actually happened was the county's economy has gone from bad to worse. So where has that 40% gone??

UK Citizen Friday, 30 June 2017 03:37 PM

None of the listed options are viable. Most of the fleet is leased at above market rates on 12 year leases with no termination clause if what I've read is correct. The net result is that the high lease costs make it impossible to ever make money - it also makes it impossible to sell the Airline.Bankruptcy is the only remaining option imho.

Salaries of all personal in future recruitment should be standardized and brought in line with the salaries of the state employes. There should be a compulsory period for promotion and for retirement. Board to be appointed from retired aviators not just anybody. (If future points required will provide to the authorities)
