Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today said he had done his utmost in taking action against State Minister Vijayakala Maheswaran.

Making a special statement in Parliament, the Speaker said informing Attorney General to take action against the State Minister was the best option he had in his capacity as the Head of the House.

“It was sad to see several MPs behaving in an unruly manner even after I have done my utmost to take action against Mrs Maheswaran.

“Two MPs behaved in a most unruly manner using foul language. This action had tarnished the image of Sri Lankan Parliament,” the Speaker said.

Also, he said it was sad to see Parliament losing the opportunity of debating and approving an important piece of legislation.

The Speaker said the House was to debate and approve the regulations imposed under the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Authority Bill under which the people were going to get several benefits. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)

Scooby Doo Thursday, 05 July 2018 09:23 AM

Its because of the gentlemen qualities of the opposition at that time. Now opposition is in the hands of thugs. Nothing wrong with the speaker. He is a gentleman.

    Cobra Thursday, 05 July 2018 07:38 AM

With the Garbage like Weerawansa in the House what does one expect? A smashed-up perfumery?

    Don Thursday, 05 July 2018 07:52 AM

Mr. Speaker, You must first black-list them and cancel their rights to be MPs, it would give a best lessen for all the MPs as well as the people who will become MPs in future.

    dulan Thursday, 05 July 2018 08:46 AM

As the speaker can you not punish these 2 MP's rather than whining

    CITIZEN Thursday, 05 July 2018 09:20 AM

We know that there are several fellows in Parliament who are not only undisciplined fellows but without proper education. Those fellows are not only so but even do not have proper family background! Therefore, we cannot expect any good behaviour from them and they are a disgrace to the dignity of Parliament! Taking these nasty experiences in mind why cant the Parliament legislate for basic education necessary for membership as, at least, A/L, so that those not even passed 8th std. could be thrown out into the Diyawanna Oya!! Otherwise, it is a slur on even the few educated men there!!!

    mohamedrafeekulla@gmail.com Thursday, 05 July 2018 09:31 AM

Monks speak about HitlerMinister speak about need of LTTE

    Senewi Thursday, 05 July 2018 09:40 AM

Speaker is politically biased. That is why he can't control the house.

    Krishantha Thursday, 05 July 2018 09:42 AM

Most bias speaker in the parliament history. Useless fellow.

    Doratupala Thursday, 05 July 2018 01:35 PM

One of the dirtiest things ever done in SL parliament was done by - ironically by "Mr. Clean" himself- remember ?

    Citizen - X Thursday, 05 July 2018 01:39 PM

Do Parliamentarians have a code conduct they have to adhere to? If not have one and have a disciplinary committee that takes action against unruly acts in parliament leading to expulsion based on severity of conduct. Wishful thinking I guess to expect expect these bunch of thugs to adhere to codes of conduct inside or outside parliament.
