A group of UNP ministers loyal to party deputy leader Sajith Premadasa held a special meeting at the parliamentary complex yesterday and explored the possibility of participating in the presidential elections under an alternative arrangement since the party hierarchy is unlikely to nominate Mr. Premadasa, the Daily Mirror learns.

Minister Kabir Hashim who is the UNP chairman called for this meeting which was attended by 60 government MPs.

Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka said the candidate should be chosen through a vote at the government’s parliamentary group meeting.

Higher Education Minister Rauff Hakeem who is also the leader of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) said it should not be left for the UNP Working Committee only to decide on the candidate.

He said the UNP counted on his party and others to defeat the no-confidence motions against the government. Therefore, he said alliance partners should not be disregarded in the selection of the presidential candidate. (Kelum Bandara)

    Sajith is not leadership material.

    Fully agreed.

Sounds great. It seems that Ranil will loose the opposition leader post as well, as Mahinda doesn't want that to happen to his loyal friend.

Yes, Ranil is a very rare leadership material with qualities of a dictatorship. But, he got defeated at about 29 elections and remarkably, the percentage of the UNP votes, reduced, except in Uva.

Be calm my dear friends. We all know it should be Sajith. Don't sling mud at fellow UNPers. You need all of them to win a very close race. Ranil have no other alternatives but to appoint Sajith. The more he tried to hold the grip the more damage he does it for himself. He had a golden opportunity last December to put the Govt in proper order but he failed. The same man Malik, everyone wants out from the caucus, Ranil never budge and the results he can see for himself. Sajith must be very careful this type of men in a future Govt. Hopefully we can see 100s of thousands in Golf Face on Wednesday or Thursday.
