The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna is to terminate the membership of a Pradeshiya Sabha member from the Moneragala District R. A. Ranaweera, after he, along with five others was arrested over the alleged rape of a minor girl, the Daily Mirror learns.

The Pradeshiya Sabha member, R. A. Ranaweera, has been suspended from all party activities and Basil Rajapaksa has urged the authorities to conduct an impartial and speedy investigation.

SLPP MP, Namal Rajapaksa told the Daily Mirror that such acts should never be tolerated and will urge authorities to conduct a speedy and impartial investigation.

“There will be no political interference in this investigation or any other investigation for that matter. This incident is unacceptable and we hear that all suspects up to now have already been arrested,” Rajapaksa said.

The Daily Mirror learns that the alleged victim is a minor and all suspects have been taken into custody and remanded till April 16 after being produced in court.(Jamila Husain)

The SLPP top dogs should seriously consider changing the party culture - that women too are living beings, not mere play things or sex objects. Its top members were involved in the infamous Tangalle gang rape and murder, rape of a child at Akuressa and now this. Get your house in order, tie up the mad dogs before lecturing the public.

Very good decision indeed, such paedophiles and rapists should have no role to play in our societies!

This is a heinous crime, raping a minor mentally challenged girl by an elected member a pradheshiya Saba. Does throwing out the accused from the party make the others in the party honorable?
