Sri Lanka's first research satellite RAAVANA-1 built by two Sri Lankan youths is set to be launched into space this April, marking our entrance into the space age, an official of the Arthur C Clarke Institute said.
RAAVANA-1 which is a cube-seized miniature satellite was built by Tharindu Dayaratne an Electrical and Electronics engineer of the University of Peradeniya and a Research engineer at the Arthur C Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies together with Dulani Chamika, a Mechatronics engineer from the same institute.
The satellite which was designed and built at the Kyushu Institute of Technology in Japan is 1000 cubic centimeters in size and weighs 1.1 kg.
This is an indigenous space programme led by the Kyushu Institute of Technology.
The RAAVANA-1 was officially handed over to the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency on February 18, 2019 and will be sent to the International Space Station on April 17, this year through the assistance of Cygnus-1 spacecraft from the United States.
The satellite is expected to fulfil five missions including the capturing of pictures of Sri Lanka and surrounding regions, active attitude stabilization which ensures that satellite’s attitude is stable under the influence of external talks.
The RAAVANA-1 is expected to obit 400 kilometers away from the earth. It will have a minimum lifespan of one and half years but was expected to be active for up to five years. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

What about that other one. Who is or was fooling whom.

I thought one of the Rajapaksha family members sent the first satellite for Sri Lanka.

Yes that's called the Chianaloan (not loon) gone beyond our galaxy

It is time that we take stern action on politicians making irresponsible statements for their own benefit (personal and party) and not for the country. These people cannot be called leaders.

Wow. Great. Well done. Good luck for a successful launch

It was built in Japan by Sri Lankans. The fact that we can't build it in SL shows how bad our country is

Hope Rohitha R is not the project manager. Hats off to this young geniuses, keep them coming.

aussies sent a large amount of bread size satellites in one rocket using for the first time nuclear power, to power the small satellites. wonder what japanese would do along with RAVANA-1. quite an achievement for sri lanka after 4000 years absence from space technology.
Dr WT Wednesday, 20 February 2019 07:20 AM
This satellite is researched and built by the Japanese, probably by Japanese Scientists. So how these two Sri Lankan Engineers claim credit for the Satellite.
Don Wednesday, 20 February 2019 08:39 AM
We had a satellite as an executive president.

It's always a collaborative effort when it comes to new technology. We do not have such technology .It's clearly mentioned in the article. .After all this is quite an interesting effort from ACC. Hope for success .probably you are from Moratuwa Unive LOL

@Dr WT common man, the circuit boards and the materiel will be designed in Japan or China for almost all satellites, just like iPhones are built in China. What matters is the designing and the planning of the Sat was done by our Engineers. yes its a Cube sat, nowadays even school children design them but we need to start somewhere.

DOCTORS ARE ALWAYS JEALOUS OF ENGINEERS. 95 % OF THINGS USED BY DOCTORS ARE DESIGNED BY ENGINEERS.
TT Wednesday, 20 February 2019 08:06 PM
Jaya, you are missing the point. Chinese build iPhone when it becomes a mass production by the Apple and on the technology given under license by the Apple to China. This satellite is not a mass production of millions of Satellites, just EXACTLY one and that one is being built by the Japanese,so it is laughable to claim these Engineering students have made a giant leap. I hope this gets into your head.

Name it the CHICHI 1 Satellite.
News Hopper Wednesday, 20 February 2019 10:56 AM
I think its an error on the reporter and DM editor should have checked it before publishing, it is designed and developed by these two fine students, and built by the Japanese for them, no different to the Iphone designed in US built in China!

We launched our satellite in Nov94. The rest is history.
Nimal Wednesday, 20 February 2019 02:29 PM
Lets name it "Chichee 2". Why 2? Because the 1 has now landed in the Mars.
Saman one Wednesday, 20 February 2019 06:20 PM
Nooo... This is not first satellite. "Dadhumonara" is orbiting around the universe according to a vise Astrologist is Siri Lanka.
