A heated argument between Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake and a journalist from the electronic media ended up with the former hitting a video camera at a media briefing this evening.

The incident flared up when the deputy minister was about to leave after the briefing.

The argument which began during the media briefing continued even after it. Mr Ramanayake accused the journalist of making a false allegation against him.

“An OIC in the police is blamed when he arrests a thief and the thief escapes. This is the situation in this country today,” Mr Ramanayake was heard saying; to which the journalist replied saying, “Even OICs take bribes today”. Mr Ramanayake who becomes furious at this point, accused the journalist of making a false allegation. “Malli you said I take bribes. I am telling you I have not done it at any time. Don’t make false allegations against me,” he said. The journalist then replied saying he did not make any false allegations against the deputy minister. The deputy minister while arguing with the journalist hit a video camera which was pionted at him. “Monawada me Karanne? ( What are you doing?)” he was heard saying while hitting the camera. This camera did not belong to the TV channel which the journalist who argued with the deputy minister was attached to.

Mr Ramanayake, when contacted by Daily Mirror, said that he had settled the issue with the authorities of the TV channel concerned. (Yohan Perera)

Journalists are the mouthpiece of the public. They relate directly with the questions and information required by the citizens of this country. All public figures have a responsibility to answer all queries made by journalists as those are the same questions / information the public await. Arrogance towards journalists can be termed as arrogance towards the information public await. MaRa regime learnt a lesson on that.

Desmond Jeromme Wednesday, 28 September 2016 09:12 AM

Oh Ranjan you are a prominent actor and a deputy minister, you should not lose temper at any cost. Wisely handle situations even though your opponent is wrong.

This is all a set up Drama, common Guys; Ranjan is an actor, oppps, actor cum politician , how bad is that ? hehe what do people expect from an actor? He is trying to gain some popularity, One shot to the video and then would have paid and settled it later, all this would have been pre planned, on the other hand, the naive citizens only can hope and hope for a better SRI LANKA.

Daily Mirror is not reporting properly. What is the questions initially raised by journalist to continue these issues to this much of level?

    malij Wednesday, 28 September 2016 11:29 AM

The media is making a mountain out of a mole hill. There are more important issues in the country. Some journalists could be down right annoying. Most do not have even basic training.

    malij Wednesday, 28 September 2016 11:34 AM

I prefer an uneducated but average man over thieving, deceiving, murderous, uncaring, self centered tyrant.

    Shehan Tuesday, 04 October 2016 04:05 PM

I don't blame him. Media personnel should have the discipline to conduct briefings in a professional manner. I doubt they would have behaved this way if it was Mahinda Rajapakse behind the microphone or some other thug from the parliament. The title of this news article proves how narrow minded the media is. The video in question is nearly 10 minutes long, and the media is fixated on highlighting half a second within which the minister lost his temper. As an expat, I am truly sad to see this.

    Selvyn Tuesday, 27 September 2016 11:55 PM

Ranjan is right ? I thouht its a film. He is playing THUG s roll in films, I believe.

    IVJ Wednesday, 28 September 2016 05:44 AM

Ranjan is right in this situation. Journalists have a critical role to play in a society and expose the truth to the public.

    ziyard Wednesday, 28 September 2016 05:37 AM

A new mervyn in the making,he should be charged. And not allowed to go Scot free

    Sam Wednesday, 28 September 2016 05:11 AM

" Eda gena Nanawa" , according to the video, no once accused Ranjan. The journalist only said " may be OIC take the bribes' it's well knows facts that some OIC's and other high rankers in the police are taking bribes and corrupt. Why Ranjan got angry and wear the hat?No one asked him to stay in a government house ? If he can effort, he can build or buy a house. No one asked him to buy a vehicle. If he has money, he can buy it.But it's looks like, he is purposely not buying and just showing off by staying in a government house for gain the political popularity.

    Mevan Wednesday, 28 September 2016 04:22 AM

Some, (not all) of the journalists who were given bribes in the form of laptop computers, in the recent past have forgotten about murders and disappearances of the journalists and try to harass genuine politicians like Ranjan by spreading lies and rumors. These fellows have an agenda to bring back to power the murderers, crooks, thugs and bribe givers.

Vimal Carlos Wednesday, 28 September 2016 03:58 AM

Funny Ranjan mention Nimal Lanza, why is he not in jail yet ?
