President Maithripala Sirisena has said he instructed the Navy Commander to arrest sand racketeers.

He said this while addressing the Environmental Pioneer Presidential Medal Awards Ceremony held at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo on Wednesday.

Referring to the recent incident in Trincomalee where there was a commotion when the Navy was attempting to arrest illegal sand miners, the President said the Navy should act without fear or favour.

“We all know that there was a tense situation in Trincomalee when the Navy tried to arrest illegal sand miners. I instructed the Navy Commander not to allow any illegal sand mining and arrest those engaged in this racket,” the President said.

The news item tells heaps of truth about how tolerant the Navy men were. They have come out of the violence unleashed by the LTTE and they don't want the cause for another unstable situation in the country. But there is limit for tolerance.

So far you have given a lot of orders in various instances. But nothing happened. Is that because nobody gives a damn ?

    Munsir Friday, 01 February 2019 06:29 AM

If we have to arrest for everything,we should start with politicians.

A first step towards a military rule?

Will this be another violation of the Constitution by the President for ordering the Navy to get involved in civilian matters when there is no emergency declared?
