The 62nd birth anniversary of slain LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was on Saturday celebrated at a university in Jaffna.

Hundreds of Jaffna University students, academic and non-academic staff gathered at the Kailasapathy Auditorium of the varsity to celebrate the birth anniversary by cutting cakes, official sources said.

They also lit candles and planted saplings in memory of those who were killed during nearly three-decade long civil war which ended in May 2009. The birth anniversary was celebrated despite the Sri Lankan government’s warning that action would be taken against anyone trying to take part in the event, sources said.

Commemoration events were held both Friday and Saturday in Jaffna. The government had said although those killed in the war could be commemorated, the LTTE war dead should not be commemorated. During the LTTE years, the week from November 21 to 27 was celebrated as the Martyr’s week which also coincided with the Prabakaran’s birthday on November 26.(PTI)

No one celebrates birthday of a terrorist. Sri Lankans do not want to remind a man who divided the country.

We commemorate the death of JVP leader Rohana Wijeweera who was killed cos of terror activities, but Government must make sure that will be no such revolution again. So it should be with the LTTE also. Democracy should have their limitation otherwise the whole nation will be in trouble again.

How did this commemoration happen in the University Auditorium after all it is a state property. IGP should take full responsibility for this debacle.

JVP is not a terrorist organisation banned by the government, but the LTTE

    Wik Sunday, 27 November 2016 04:20 PM

People did not forgotten what happened. 88-89 is result of then UNP banning of JVP and other political parties. LTTE was trained by India as result of then UNP government and Rajive Gandhi government indifference.
