Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith yesterday said that people who had been shaped by Buddhist civilization do not violate human rights and added a society which attempts to make human rights a religion, could safeguard human rights effectively through Buddhist teaching.

Cardinal Ranjith expressed these views at the prize giving of Kanduboda Shri Saranankara Daham Pasala in Delgoda organized by the Ven. Parakaduwe Sri Saranankara Thera recently. Chancellor of the Kelaniya University Ven. Dr. Walamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thera presided over the event.

He said there were threats posed on religions at present and added that Buddhism was the backbone of this country and it was a religion which had been followed by the people in this land for a long time.

“Rights of all people in this country are safeguarded when Buddhist culture is safeguarded. Anti religious ideologies are being filtered into the society today. We have to put them aside and safeguard religions,” he said.

“Since we have inherited a great culture over the years, there is no need to think about human rights in a special way. Religions are not followed in some countries. Human rights are safeguard in our country much more than what is prescribed by the UN in Sri Lanka because of the Buddhist environment,” he added.

He also said the efforts made by the Buddhist clergy to bring up children according to Buddhist principals were commendable. (Sudath Pubudu Keerthi)

You are ready to become a politician !

    shanthapriya Friday, 28 September 2018 09:57 AM

His remarks is a blessing to all people to live in harmony and peacefully without being divided

    True Friday, 28 September 2018 10:05 AM

Preach good and practice the opposite like we have seen in the past!

    Aelajoe Friday, 28 September 2018 03:05 PM

Spot on. A typical politician's statement. The Cardinal is looking for cheap publicity. Catholics and even Buddhists are not amused

    nilanjala Friday, 28 September 2018 01:38 AM

His Eminence ! Better look into the own flock. There's so much to be done ! ....without politicizing the religion.

    D.E.M. Ocracy Friday, 28 September 2018 02:02 PM

Well said Nilanjala. Malcolm Ranjith is going over the limit and should not involve in politics. On the other hand he should shed his Robes and then contect the Election on the Flower Bud ticket.

cardinal has made a cradinal statement. in fact human rights was a creation by former president USA jimmy carter. in fact it should be more of HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY than HUMAN RIGHTS.

    Sampath Friday, 28 September 2018 03:38 AM

I think this Cardinal doesn't understand the meaning of "Human Rights"

    raj Friday, 28 September 2018 03:56 AM

Has he given up his religion now???

    TMA Friday, 28 September 2018 04:42 AM

I'm sure you are not talking about Sri Lanka. Because it is NOT shaped by Buddhist civilisation

    Sas Friday, 28 September 2018 05:41 AM

Here we go again....... I guess the Cardinal must stop talking about HR

    Sarith Friday, 28 September 2018 06:10 AM

Once again, your eminence, please stay out of politics, that's not your job. You are right when you say that human rights are mostly based on the principles of Buddhism - this is something the United Nations itself has acknowledged, but unfortunately many Buddhists in Sri Lanka don't follow true Buddhists principles so the need for human rights activism occurs.

Gamini Abheyadeera Friday, 28 September 2018 06:22 AM

Your Eminence - well said. At least we are happy you have stood for Sri Lanka as a Sri LankanThe Mahanayakes of Asgiriya and Malwatta should be ashamed for not making any comments to protect his Grace the Cardinal who had spoken on behalf of Sri Lanka many timeTime have come for all Bhuddist and Catholics to come together to protext Sri Lanka at this Juncture

    Ash Friday, 28 September 2018 03:12 PM

They don't talk about HR, did you hear anything when whole Kandy districts was burnt a few months ago.

    Chris Friday, 28 September 2018 07:02 AM

Really? Maybe he should defend the regime in Myanmar too. This cardinal is talking through his hat.

    Thirdeye Friday, 28 September 2018 07:06 AM

Dear Rev. Archbishop. You are a true Sri Lankan. You are giving the greatest example about religious harmony to all the religious leaders and people in this country.

    Thushari Friday, 28 September 2018 10:32 AM

    It is based on respect...

daily boru Friday, 28 September 2018 11:02 AM

he is another Mahanayake. More interested in politics and to become popular.

    Shelly. Friday, 28 September 2018 01:44 PM

True.Budhist civilization is for HR. But not most of Budhists as individuals . Pl. check you own record.

    Shelly Friday, 28 September 2018 01:50 PM

True.Budhists civilization stands for HR. But not most of the budhists as individuals. No one should try to white wash such persons.

    mariam Friday, 28 September 2018 03:04 PM

It may be true that Human rights are based on the principles of BuddhismBut is it only Buddhism that teaches the value of Human Rights? All religions do; even the Catholic Church he leads. . It sure seems as if the Cardinal has forgotten what Jesus preached:.To "love thy neighbour as thyself" Anyone who lives by this can never violate human rights. Its great to foster religious harmony but he must not speak as if the very religion he represents does not . incorporate these same principles. Stop making biased statements your Eminence

Nihal Amarasekera Friday, 28 September 2018 03:29 PM

If atheism is the issue coupled with human rights; Buddhism is a philosophy and NOT a religion (though may be the majority of Buddhists practice it as a religion - with ritualism)

    Dilshan Friday, 28 September 2018 03:35 PM

Hon. Minister Mano Ganesan, Minister of National Integration, Reconciliation and Official Languages who have you stayed silent!? You should be doing what Minister Mangala is doing are you afraid of losing the popular votes?

    Haasanda Friday, 28 September 2018 04:56 PM

Cardinal Y all these Sweet HoneyTalk are u scared of BBS

    Janaka Friday, 28 September 2018 05:41 PM

Tell that to the Rohyingya Muslims in Buddhist Myanmar who are being massacred by the BuddhistsJanaka

    Nimal Friday, 28 September 2018 06:25 PM

Cardinal does not know how human rights have been in built in to the doctrine preached by Jesus. Jesus once said "Do unto others what you like them to do to you" Cardinal that is human rights.

    Sincere Friday, 28 September 2018 06:26 PM

    He is on popularity stint.

    Ghost Friday, 28 September 2018 06:33 PM

How does he say these things with his foot already in the mouth?

    N Umagiliya Friday, 28 September 2018 07:12 PM

How about Myanmar persecuting Rohyingya and Chinese imprisoning the Uyghur into concentration camps? The Chinese HR violation are inhuman and target any government opposition or critic. Nobel peace prize winner Liu Xiaobothe died while serving in a detention camp. How about Chinese mistreatment of Tibetans who are practicing and peace loving Buddhist?

    Sil Friday, 28 September 2018 07:23 PM

I love most reverend's sermons, which bring people together and never make split among them, like some do,
