Only Ministers who are under the influence of drugs could condemn the killing of the underworld criminal in Matara, JVP-affiliated Voice Against Corruption (VAC) Convenor Wasnatha Samarasinghe said today.

He said this while referring to a statement made by Finance and Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera on Sunday that the killing of a suspect while in police custody could not be justified just as the police constable's killing, which could not be justified.

“Only those who are under the influence of drugs (Kudu Gahapu Amathiwaru) could make such remarks as the one made by the minister,” Mr. Samarasinghe said. “The underworld leader was killed when attempting to shoot a policeman. I wonder where in the world is a criminal who has shot at the police spared."

He also criticised Asgiriya Chapter Anunayake the Ven. Wendaruwe Upali Thera who had reportedly called for a dictator-type leader to rule Sri Lanka.

“A member of the Buddhist clergy should not make such statements. Is he unaware as to what happened in Germany during Hitler’s time?

He asked whether the prelate had forgotten about the killing of Roshan Chanaka at Katunayake and the abducting and killing of journalists during the previous regime.

Mr. Samarasinghe accused the government of misleading people by publishing wrong figures pertaining to the current economic growth. He said the real growth rate was 2.7 per cent while the government had published the growth rate as 3.2 per cent. He said the GDP in the first quarter of 2017 was Rs.2,164,477 whereas it was shown to be Rs.2,154,971 million when computing the GDP in the first quarter of 2018. (Yohan Perera)

Sorry, I agree with minister Mangala. Your statement is hypocritic and ironic. Sri Lanka police is a state institution and therefore must protect everyone's rights (including criminals). There's a proper judicial procedure that should be followed even if if takes 20 years. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.

    das Monday, 25 June 2018 10:23 PM

That's the problem. JVP still thinks they can be judge, jury and executioner and kill who they like

    DHA Monday, 25 June 2018 10:36 PM

They are just ensuring Mangala win so our minister is just returning the favor....

    It is only the uncivilized

Probably the Minister got this Underworld guy killed and them makes a statement against it. Yahapalanaya for Human Rights?

    Jehan Tuesday, 26 June 2018 09:33 AM

Ha ha 2.7% economic growth? I think the 6.2million idiots are quite happy now that even Bangladesh has a higher economic growth than us. In 2010-2015 we had a higher economic growth than India.

    Ouch Tuesday, 26 June 2018 09:34 AM

The problem is that even JVP takes that drug once in a while and preaches us about human rights of terrorists.

    Yeti Tuesday, 26 June 2018 09:35 AM

Government is not concerned about the economy at all. They know that they can win the election just by Rajapakshe fear mongering.

    tishan Tuesday, 26 June 2018 09:55 AM

If this killing is right welikada prisoners massacre also right.

    City Tuesday, 26 June 2018 02:02 PM

How on earth can you compare welikada incident with this.

    Ajith Tuesday, 26 June 2018 01:10 PM

I am not sure Anura Kumara will agree with this guy.

Faleel Mohammed Tuesday, 26 June 2018 02:05 PM

Even criminals do have their human rights and needs to be respected. Simply because they have been accused of criminality is no licence even to the police to kill anyone. The law must take it's course and justice should be meted out evenly.

My dear you have to wait so long understand gentleman ideas.

    Dalit Tuesday, 26 June 2018 04:44 PM

Only those who say "religion is the opium of the masses" are allowed to kill innocent civilians and civil servants.

    Nagananda Tuesday, 26 June 2018 07:00 PM

People expect the JVP, the party that talks about the rule of law, to condemn this killing. Criminal shall be punished by the Judiciary and not by the Police. Any person with common sense understands that this nothing but a murder. Probably the JVP is the party that suffered heavily from the extra-judicial killing in 80's, as their entire Central Committee members were wiped out adopting the same process.

    Athula Tuesday, 26 June 2018 07:35 PM

I totally agree with Mr Mangala Samaraweera. Justice should be served to everyone equally. That is the prime responsibility of a government. Law enforcement authorities of a country can't act as as a Mafia organization or a terorist outfit. If criminals are to be brought to justice there is an accepted civilized way of doing it through the judicial system of the country. It was so disgusting to see the large number of posts in social media in approval of this incident. More political leaders civil society activists and the religious leaders should follow the minister in a bid to try and change the paradigm of the majority of the people in this country who justify this kind of unacceptable activity. People should be made to realise the value of law and order.

    Don Tuesday, 26 June 2018 08:31 PM

JVP were worse Killers in 70-90 for 3 decades, now they act like Priests.

    Farook Wednesday, 27 June 2018 11:49 AM

Wasantha Samarasinghe's statement makes it very clear that he represents a terrorist outfit. People of our country have a clear view about them as well.
