Commenting on Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardana's remarks that elections have been held even when people died from dengue, star Cricketer Kumar Sangakkara asked, "Not the most enlightened comment, is it?"

At the Cabinet press briefing yesterday, Minister Gunawardana said the elections were held during the previous governments times when people were dying from dengue. He said this in response to a question asked on holding the general election during the COVID-19 pandemic.

When the news was shared on twitter, Sangakkara responded, "Not the most enlightened comment, is it?"

Why are dead of so called natural causes being cremated when they show signs of COVID? Answers are needed.

Power hungry politicians never understand a pandemic. These rascals should be sent to galore.

Absolutely not. Moreover, don't get entangled in such. They are not your territory to thread around

    Aquarius Friday, 01 May 2020 09:11 PM

This is the man who claimed people can survive on Rs 2500. Should we be surprised with his comments in comparing Dengue to COVID-19?

    harshask Friday, 01 May 2020 09:19 PM

The enlightened economist who argued that people could live with 2500

    Sammy Friday, 01 May 2020 09:21 PM

I would say it is a most foolish comment.

Mahen Ranasinghe Friday, 01 May 2020 09:26 PM

Sanga has been too polite. Bandula G is the biggest idiot. Someone should write a book "King Idiot of Sri Lanka" and include Bandula's long list of idiotic statements.

    CITIZEN Friday, 01 May 2020 09:40 PM

WONDER WHY DR. BG IS TRYING TO PLEASE THE GOVT WITH UNWARRANTED STATEMENTS AND COMMENTS. THE GOVT WANTS TO GO AHEAD WITH ELECTIONS CLAIMING THAT THE OPPOSITION IS OBJECTING AS THEY ARE AFRAID OF LOOSING. WHILE THE OPPOSITION WANTS THE ELECTIONS POSTPONED DUE THE EPIDEMIC AND THE DANGERS IT POSE TO THE MASSES

    DJ Friday, 01 May 2020 09:44 PM

Well he is a enlightened one, if not how can he stay in politics being a brainless twit

    vince Saturday, 02 May 2020 06:12 PM

    did you mean TWAT?

    Bandi Friday, 01 May 2020 09:48 PM

IF the alternative to an election is to bring back the yahapalanaya clang back into parliament, then I am with Bandula..... if not then I am with Sanga.

Gehan Wijesinghe Friday, 01 May 2020 09:51 PM

It is sure not. Can you expect enlightened comments from these unenlightened and servile minded politicians. If they have an iota of shame and self respect they would have left their jobs years early.

    renu Friday, 01 May 2020 09:59 PM

I am sure his Phd must be from Timbaktu , He generally makes such meaningless statements like Rs:2500/- I wonder whether he knows Dengu is transmitted by Mosquitoes

    Johan Friday, 01 May 2020 10:42 PM

Most of the politicians in our country are having the characters of either fox or crocodile .There is nothing to surprise about their vomiting their Foolishness

    S.H.Moulana Friday, 01 May 2020 10:43 PM

Even if that was authentic who said that dengue is pandemic. I was reminded of the US president Trump who comes out with things like what our honourable minister has come out with. We support Sanga 100% in this case.

    Jude Friday, 01 May 2020 10:43 PM

Dear Sanga, keep away from politics and refrain from commenting or responding to political comments!! Yeah!!

    Jude Friday, 01 May 2020 10:53 PM

C'mon Sanga, the same idiot said in 2012 that Rs.7500 enough for family of 3 !!! Sanga YOU'RE the DEMIGOD, NEVER respond for any IDIOTIC comments made by any low class low level POLITICIAN !!.Period!!

    YZ Friday, 01 May 2020 11:04 PM

Being a renowned media, daily mirror thoroughly see why Sanga posted such a reply before misleading the public audience. I would recommend, 'Daily Mirror' once again see the thread of comments. It wasn't a comment on Bandula's remarks but to a guy who commented baselessly with no sense to the remarks at all.

    Tamil Friday, 01 May 2020 11:10 PM

Rajapaksas want the elections to go ahead now in the middle of a pandemic is because the country is doing relatively good at the present with covid-19 and hence their popularity continues to remain high. But postponing the elections to the future is risky for them as the covid-19 situation can change at anytime. Let us be honest, any politician from any party in Rajapaksas situation would do the same.

Gehan Wijesinghe Saturday, 02 May 2020 10:46 AM

I saw some comment about this ministers doctorate. It reminds of me, that this person, who is supposed to be a expert of economics and even tutored so many thousands ( if not millions ) of students in economics a few decades back, told the courts that he was not aware that he was responsible for the debts of a defaulter for who he was the surety ( he was the guarantor for the loan). If I am not mistaken, the learned judge asked him if he was not a tutor of economics and also help some ministerial portfolio connected with the finance ministry. Shame on you Mr. Gunawardena. A shame indeed.

This nation keeps going down, down and down and in the next 5 years another BIG down! This is our fate!

    Anton Saturday, 02 May 2020 11:48 AM

Before the elections the President will have to ascertain whether he is mentally stable to hold a cabinet portfolio.

Bandu Wanigasekera Saturday, 02 May 2020 11:50 AM

BG said he voted at 1988 election with JVP trouble. These are two situations that cannot be compared. JVP was personal threat but mitigated by army security but COVID is a national threat transferred by anyone and none to help.

    Nimal Saturday, 02 May 2020 11:53 AM

This minister is increasingly turning out to be Goebbels of the government

    Anula A Saturday, 02 May 2020 12:05 PM

@YZ - I think you dont know how Twitter works. You can SEE the thread (even in the pic provided) that Sanga replied to and its a direct reply to AA, who is quoting the politician. Boomer, go home.

Ranjith Christopher Saturday, 02 May 2020 12:12 PM

One can not expect more than that from him.He is the who claimed sometime back that a fanily of three could livea month with Rs.7500.00

Russell Casie Chitty Saturday, 02 May 2020 01:03 PM

What else can you except from a brainless idiot like bandula gunawardena who said a family of four could survive on Rs. 2500 a month. People must stay away from polling booths if elections are held. Such politicos are the bane of this country. Rusty
