Neighbours in uproar over super luxury condo in Rajagiriya

Female residents living off Buthgamuwa Road, Welikada, Rajagiriya, are facing difficulties due to disturbing and indecent activities of Chinese, Indian and local workers working in a construction project of private apartments, named Iconic Galaxy on a land in their neighborhood.

The affected houses are located in between two construction sites; one belongs to the China Habour Engineering Company Private Limited and the Iconic Development.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, one of the residents, Dinali Perera, mother to three daughters, said the workers at the site cause severe difficulties especially for women.

“They walk on our road everyday smoking and without being properly attired. We don’t even go out of our houses after 6pm. Sometimes, when these workers see women they expose themselves and lift their sarongs. Besides that, they bring various women in three-wheelers at night. We find used condoms right outside our houses in the morning. They even pass sexual remarks at our daughters while on the road,” Dinali explained the ordeal.

This Buthgamuwa Road, which has 14 residences, does not connect to any other road and ends at a canal. Actual access to the construction land on the other side of a canal is from Kamatawatta Road, but the constructors have created a new access by building a bridge across the canal, Col. Retd.Vikum Siriwardana, one of the residents, told the Daily Mirror.

Residents alleged that the Sri Jayawardanepura Kotte MC had aided Indian property developer Iconic Developments Pvt Ltd by fraudulently issuing a certificate to the effect that Buthgamuwa Road is a road belonging to the municipality.

“Our numerous written complaints to Welikada Police, UDA, SLLRDC and the Sri Jayawardanepura-Kotte Municipal Council haven’t been acknowledged nor action being taken. We do not know whether the Government of Sri Lanka has given this area over to Indians as it appears that Laws of the state are no longer applicable in this area” Siriwardana further said. There are rumours that foreign prisoners are working in many projects. Government should clarify.

It's a known fact that Chinese prisoners are working at the sites they are building.

I live down buthgamuwa road. This is all rubbish. These people down this lane have tried to blackmail iconic to give them aparemtments for free in order for them to stop the protest. Typical Sri Lanka mentality. Wont allow any development without trying to gain personally.

    haris Thursday, 13 September 2018 04:39 PM

strange that this is the same wording used by "iconic" spokes person. Trying to discredit the real residents

    Jaliya Thursday, 13 September 2018 07:03 PM

Kumara, I don't think anyone is looking for a free apartment or a discounted price. I think the Indian property developer here is the problem

Chinese workers are known to smoke and drink heavily and can be unpleasant, but the sexual harassment comes mainly from the Local and some Indian workers. Chinese workers don't wear sarongs.

    Sammy Thursday, 13 September 2018 03:58 PM

Why are there Chinese and Indian workers, unless at technical grade? Are there no capable Sri Lankan manual workers? I have seen Sri Lankan workers working in local projects hooting

    Dee Thursday, 13 September 2018 02:18 PM

Look into the background of these 'protestors' . Probably mostly unauthorized structures and looking out for some freebie from the developer. Sri Lanka will never develop with this sort of people. Oh! By the way if someone knows where I could get Indian, Philippines or Chinese worker as general worker for garden/ house- please advise. Have given up on looking out for local fellows , they usually run away after lunch that too after taking a bit more than half day pay as lunch advance.

    Prashantha Thursday, 13 September 2018 02:20 PM

This is not development but an environmental disaster to the area. A land designated as a flood water detention area has been completely filled and raised by these Indians with the aid of corrupt officials of SLLRDC and Kotte MC and constructing apartments .

    Patriot Thursday, 13 September 2018 02:34 PM

BOI should not allow these type of investments. these are not investments beneficial to the country. These Indian crooks have tied up with the land owner promising 21 apartments to him, constructing the apartments mainly with money collected as pre sales from Sri Lankans. Most of the money goes out of the country as architects, Structural Engineers, Interior Designers are all Indians and mostly foreign labour.

    Waco Thursday, 13 September 2018 02:58 PM

Are there any men with Back Borns living in that area?

    Asanka Thursday, 13 September 2018 03:36 PM

It is not Chinese workers. It is Indian workers who behaves Very bad manner.

    somapala Thursday, 13 September 2018 04:43 PM

These people who opposes such projects may be enjoying the shanties around them. If a dictator comes to power there will be no protests.

    Gune Thursday, 13 September 2018 05:52 PM

The LTTE fought with guns and tried to take over our land. The Chinese and Indians lift their sarongs and we give our land. Truly Iconic !!!!!

    Rodger Thursday, 13 September 2018 08:16 PM

    Vote again faithfully

    Manik Thursday, 13 September 2018 11:37 PM

What a ridiculous story. Aged old law says; The parents must protect their children from any sort of danger. So what is the problem, take few pictures of these indecent activities and beat the hell out of the guys. You are well protected in any credible court of law."Better to live like eagles and not like crows". Ask yourself Col. Vikum Siriwardene, is this the way you want to live? disgraceful cry babies.

    Jaliya Friday, 14 September 2018 05:44 PM

Manik, A crow can never be an eagle likewise an eagle wont be a crow either.

    DPerera Friday, 14 September 2018 07:02 AM

Has any affected person reported the matter to police rather than talking to newspapers?

    Tommy Friday, 14 September 2018 07:19 AM

This story does not sound like a fabrication. These residents must complain this matter to the Police. Hopefully, the Police can do a random patrol of the area to keep these characters off the street.

    Malik Friday, 14 September 2018 09:02 AM

Directors of Iconic are all Indians. Share Holder is a company registered in Singapore by Indians. Thanks to Prime Minister and Minister Samarawickrama and their FTA with Singapore, this is what will happen to Sri Lankans in other areas as well in the very near future as more and more Indians will start invading Sri Lanka through Singapore.

    zaheem Friday, 14 September 2018 10:16 AM

The residents should check with UDA if the developers has valid building permits..

Lal Silva Friday, 14 September 2018 11:09 AM

Wait, these are only lowly workers. We have sold our country to China, to finance the war which we couldn't afford. Before long we will have to work under Chinese bosses!

harith hewawasam Friday, 14 September 2018 11:22 AM

who says residents are shanty dwellers? The victims are middle class residents in area with professionals as heads of households. Most indian companies get down workers on tourist visa and they play hell here. We don't know how many RAW agents and spies are among them. Plus while china and india at war one wonders how the chinese work for indian companies here.

    nadun Friday, 14 September 2018 11:25 AM

residents who protest are neither anti-development nor are they shanty dwellers. Shanty dwellers are elsewhere. These are decent people they are against the indecent, sleazy ways of these migrant workers. The chinese and Indian workers have made the area more like a Red Light district in Mumbai or beijing.

    Clitas Friday, 14 September 2018 12:41 PM

Reply to DPerera: Yes. The residents have complained to Welikada Police, but no action. The residents have written to UDA, SLLRDC, National Police Commission also. As nothing happened, they spoke to the Daily Mirror.

    Jaliya Friday, 14 September 2018 05:54 PM

Does the residents have a complained record from Welikada Police ? Usually a piece of paper with date and reference number ... that piece of paper can be given to an attorney who can request the "B"report for the inquiry from the Welikada Police .. with that "B" report you can file a court case without the police.

The UDA should implement regulations. A large number of people suffer as the UDA does not take action on complaints.

    Dawood Friday, 14 September 2018 01:06 PM

Top officials of UDA, SLLRDC, Police and Kotte MC are all corrupt. This company earlier did a similar project on Parliament Road. Mayor and Engineer of Kotte MC gave approvals disregarding regulations. These Indians throw lot of money around and buy over politicians and officials. No amount of complaints will work.
