Attorney General Dappula de Livera said today the prisons have become the playgrounds of criminals and pointed out that the prison department lacked honest and efficient officers.
He said this when addressing prison officers at the Welikada Prison and claimed that a majority of the jailers were addicted to taking bribes from criminals.
“It is a well known secret that prison inmates are protected by prison officers and prison officers are protected by inmates,” the AG said.
He said there was no discipline among the prison officers and inmates and pointed out that the rehabilitation of inmates had not been properly carried out.
The AG said the public too had lost faith in the prison department.
“I know that there are a few honest officers in this department. However, majority of them are corrupt,” he said.
“Hence, it is essential to put things right and for that, we need strong leadership and honest and efficient officers." (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Got to start from somewhere Dee if atleast 10% is achieved it's a start and it's a big step than not achieving anything. It's best you shut up and support the efforts or get out... Forever finding fault is an issue here...look at all the negative comments, this is nothing to do with your party affiliations or your hatred to the president or his government. Support their efforts for the betterment of all.

As much as the Corona Virus is pandemic, bribery and most of all bending the law to let off henchaiyas of the VIPs is endemic in Sri Lanka. Happened then happens now. Driver who killed Policeman under influence released on pittance of bail of only Rs.200,000

Before looking into others he should look inwards into the Justice Dept. Indefinite postponement of important bribery and corruption cases is also due to bribe being taken.

In 2018 October coup, this man only went to SC and said Sirisena is 100% perfect in launching the coup, now he is finding fault with others. Look at the underworld thugs who are retired or eloped Ranawiruwo who are shooting for business. Recently a policeman transported a gunmen to Mirissa, to kill another gang master. not Jailers.
LAW ABIDING Saturday, 20 June 2020 08:01 AM
Please hold a mirror and look into it and ask - "do I deserve to be AG". Then perhaps you may step down and give it to a LAW ABIDING COMPETENT HONEST PERSON.

Many issues in courts and Attorny General dept. AGs trying to please govt to get an appointment to Judiciary and Chief Justice positions as bribes. AG now has to be independant, they were sleeping on Rajapakse cases for the past 5 years.

Why suddenly he started blaming prison officers.. He could have done that many years ago know.. Probably triying to be too smart before getting blasted by president. justice department is one of the worst inefficient brainless department and worst than prison department ..
A WAY OF LIFE Saturday, 20 June 2020 08:30 AM
Bribery ! ! ? - it is a way of life. To name a few takers - CMC (for building plans, COCs, etc) , Awarding of contracts in Govt institutions, Politicos for even considering a proposal or even awarding a contract, Getting a payment passed without delays, obtain a driving license, clearing of goods at customs, - well these are just a few !

Sira Saturday, 20 June 2020 08:53 AM

Sam Panditha Saturday, 20 June 2020 09:40 AM
You were AG for over 1 year. Why this sudden interest in the Prisons? Very timely Political Brownie point time. Just after the President appointed a Committee to clean up the Prisons. If you are so committed also enquire why all the rich prisoners end up in Hospital and only the poor serve the term in jail
Jehan Saturday, 20 June 2020 10:13 AM
AJ wants to be CJ so work the politicians.

The best way is to fire all prison officials, train young people before they become corrupted. Enforce the law and monitor constantly. If inmates do engage in illegal activities, give appropriate punishments immediately. Such as keep them isolated cells with no chance of giving contacts to them from outside the world or just Capital punishment if it is impossible to rehabilitate them. We need very strict rules for this country to move forward.

You mean it took you so long to realize that?

It is very clear about his intentions. He should not be in this position. This is nothing more than election drama, he plays what his master told him to do.

So true and you had come out all of a sudden out of blues. I believe it is sooner the better to live in a pleasant enviorement. Hats off to you sir.
Renu Saturday, 20 June 2020 11:34 AM
Dapula Please look into your Department first , most of the cases are not heard because they are hidden for years and you big bosses don't care to look into it . First digitalize the whole place , Use first in First out and make it transparent to all concerned, and to RTI so that the public is aware of what has happening ,also give the results of the judgements for the public to know about action taken, so before you preach put your House in order. Thank You

Saharan's file being there from June 2017 to May 2019, AG took the file out after Saharan accomplished his treacherous task
Andrew Silva Saturday, 20 June 2020 12:13 PM
What a laugh A.G most of the corrupt are the politicians. It will be like winning a lottery if you can find a uncorrupt, not addicted to bribes M.P First clean your lot.
neil Saturday, 20 June 2020 03:52 PM
Good talk. someting is better than nothing. But President should have declared war against the correuption among politicians, contracts, All gov instititions including harbour, Motor vehicle, Pensions, Police, judges, lawyes, water, electricity etc. and prision faocus should have been a part of that overall effort.

Ha ha haaa..... Hi hi hiiii.... Around 7500 chargers were filed to Nissanka Senadhipathi-Avan Guard. But ultimately examine around 19 charges and all other chargers dismissed. First do your job correctly and example to people.
dara Monday, 22 June 2020 06:09 AM
But without these unscrupulous, bribe taking prison officers, how do all high class fellows including politicos spend luxury life in jail
Shown Monday, 22 June 2020 09:54 PM
Now day by day people who backed murderers coming, except onething from AG's department, that is why kept terrorist Saharan 's file so long in AG's dept., who is responsible for the delay, its good if AG shows transparency on this issue
