Wayamba Development and Buddasasana Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said he is planning to submit a Cabinet Paper with the signatures of all Cabinet of Ministers to stop private tuition on Sundays and Poya Days to make Daham School Education compulsory for children.
The Minister expressed these views during a media briefing after participating in the National ceremony to appreciate creative talents of Daham Pasal students.
The Minister further said that this decision had been taken not only for Buddhist children and but also for Hindu, Catholic and Muslim children on the request of religious leaders of all religions with the intervention of the Ministers who have been empowered with the relevant religious subjects.
Though the relevant proposal was submitted to the Cabinet earlier, Cabinet approval could not be obtained due to the prevailing political situation in the country, he said.
He further said that he discussed about this with the Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam and he agreed to adds 10 marks to the result sheets of GCE (O/L) and A/L Examinations with the idea of promoting Daham Education among children.( Nayanajeewa Bandara )

The government should not force religious education on children. What about families that don't follow any religion? If government wants to promote a well behaved society, focus on economic development. Where there is enough, people will not resort to immoral acts.

My suggestion is first of all the teachers should be paid handsomely, make sure teachers must teach with dedication like good old days, monitor teachers performance etc

Very good idea. Garmini should go further with Akila to ban Tuition classes conducted or employing Government education Department Teachers. This will give more time for school children to participate in school activities such as play , school societies etc., which will have a positive impact on the young generation. Now the teachers induce the children to go to private tuition classes conducted by them, rather than teach them in schools what is essential. There is no developed country with such a level of private Tuition classes as Sri Lanka.

Moral values are declining due to the poor knowledge and values of religion . Hence banning tuition classes on sundays and making sunday religious classes is most welcome .

Sri Lanka is a secular country. Religious portfolios are unnecessary. Instead of religious subjects in public schools, the subject should be ethics, as in other countries. With such a law, the men in orange can not fill their deserted temples. There should be no pressure on children to attend the Sunday School in temples. By the way: It's a scandal and inhumane to dump little boys in temples to become monks.

I would appreciate if school going children's parents give their comments here as they only know the gravity of the problem.I appreciate the decision to bann tuition classes on sundays and poyadays. But we should not make the Daham School Education compulsory. But kids could use this day freely for extra curricular activities.
