Kusal Mendis' maiden test hundred pulled Sri Lanka out of trouble as they reached 253 for five at tea on the third day of the first test against Australia.
Mendis was on 165, alongside Dhananjaya de Silva, who had reached 31, and the Sri Lanka total was 268 for 5.
During the first session, Sri Lanka lost three wickets for 110 runs and Mendis reached his maiden Test hundred just after the lunch on Day 3.
Sri Lanka scored 117 in its first innings and Australia made 203.
