It has emerged that notorious underworld drug kingpin Makandure Madush had orchestrated four major criminal offences from Dubai, which include the prison bus attack in which 'Samayan' was killed, the shooting incident of narcotic officers in Piliyandala, the Kos Malli murder and the five-billion-rupee worth diamond robbery.
Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said today, following this revelation by the CID, that investigations are now being conducted into his links to these criminal acts from this year and last year. He told a media briefing that Makandure Madush was currently being detained by the CID.
'Samayan' and six others were killed when a prison bus was shot at in Kalutara on February 27, 2017, while the shooting that targeted a group of anti-narcotic officers in Piliyandala took place on May 9, 2017, killing two, including a police officer.
The headless body of Shantha Kumara, alias Kos Malli, was found buried in Angunakolapeless, while the Pannipitiya incident involving a diamond worth more than Rs.5 billion had been masterminded by Makandure Madush while residing in Dubai.
The CID is also analysing the phone numbers used by Makandure Madush to coordinate the four incidents with the suspects.
Madush and 30 other Sri Lankans including singer Amal Perera, his son Nadimal, and underworld criminals identified as Keselwatte Dinuka and Kanjipani Imran, were among those arrested in Dubai during a joint raid carried out by Dubai law enforcement authorities on February 4 this year. Madush was deported to Sri Lanka on May 5, 2019.
Thirty of those individuals arrested along with Madush were deported to Sri Lanka earlier on several occasions by the Dubai authorities. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
