The Police today launched an operation to arrest beggars frequenting traffic lights in a move to prevent traffic congestion and possible road accidents.

They said the decision was taken because those begging at traffic lights were a hindrance to vehicular traffic often resulting in congestion.

So many will be out of business. Including parents who rent out small kids, ones with slight deformities at double than normal ones.

That guy also comes to Templers Rd for begging. He usually smiles even if you don't give him money.

There is a beggar, well groomed, with a well maintained beard, who frequents the FAB outlet at Mount Lavinia junction, who will always request for a packet of lunch from all those coming out of FAB. sometimes I see this guy walking down Indrajothi Road at a pace much faster than those who frequent a gym. (I think he is also aided by the security guard at the FAB). Be careful

Its only temporary if the police is handling it. I have to literally tell them to stop three wheelers crossing double lines to congest at traffic lights. via DM Android App

if the beggars to started to bribe the traffic police officers, they will be free to beg again near color lights..

Its a good move . We find difficult to drive thro colour lights when beggars are standing in between vehicles .

    Sanje Thursday, 20 October 2016 09:13 AM

Excellent. I hope they will strictly implement the law , and not , only for 1-2 weeks.

Our average people are creative or not, beggars are. Not just politicians, even beggars started to take us for a ride with new tactics:I encountered a few times, usually by the fuel stations guys coming in three-wheelers or bikes and asking for any amount claiming they ran out of fuel. And then others, usually husband, wife and a kid, relatively okay dressed requesting money saying different stories. There are also more trickier guys in Colombo area requesting only baby milk-powder packets and not money, I guess they sell it back to make money.
