The Education Ministry will introduce law as a subject to the school curriculum starting from Grade six as an alternative subject for the GCE O/L examination, Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.
He said Cabinet approved the proposal and a committee was appointed to prepare the curriculum with law as a subject.
“We have proposed to include road law and road safety, laws relating to juvenile security, human and fundamental rights, law relating to public assets, environment law, law on human trafficking, sexual harassment on children and flora and fauna and the basics of the Criminal Procedure Code etc, to be included in the curriculum,” the minister said.
He said the main objective was to produce a country with law-abiding people who are fully aware of their rights, privileges and responsibilities which are lacking at the moment. (Sandun A Jayasekera)
