Five officials of the Customs Department including a woman were hospitalized today after they were allegedly assaulted by a Kuwaiti couple at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) when they were requested to quarantine their pet dog.

Customs Spokesman Deputy Director Sunil Jayaratne said the Kuwaiti couple who arrived in Sri Lanka from Kuwait were not willing to proceed with the animal quarantine regulation and they had attempted to forcibly exit the BIA Arrival Lounge along with their pet dog.

“Five Customs officials including a Deputy Director and a female official were injured  when they were attacked by the couple. They were admitted to Negombo General Hospital,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Police said the Kuwaiti couple was arrested. (Kalathma Jayawardhane)

Officers in uniform have kept their decorum, they do not assult passengers under any provocation. Your comment is moot. They behaved as they should and should be congratulated for their refined

    RP Saturday, 28 July 2018 07:26 PM

Too late, custom officers missed their chance. Now, our government will bend backwards and release them fearing not to antagonize Kuwaiti Gov’t.Pity indeed. Our people are manhandled by foreign nationals in our own country. Get ready for more similar actions from our erstwhile Chinese tourists.

They must have thought the Customs Guys are their domestic servants. Uncvilised barbs.

In Kuwait most sons are introduced into learning sex via the Sri Lankan maids. It is a disgrace to Sri Lanka. That is why the Kuwaiti couple were not at all scared and beat up the customs men.

    Ceylon Saturday, 28 July 2018 01:28 PM

That mean even this sex maids are stick to live there decades.that mean there sex is very wellcome by lanka maids.otherwuse why they stay there in tens of thousands.

    sss Saturday, 28 July 2018 07:32 PM

Ceylon,'The dollars sent by them you use without any shame though. In fact SL we go bankrupt without housemaid dollars

    HW Friday, 27 July 2018 09:35 PM

It is not physically possible for a couple to beat up four men and a woman in uniform. There is more to the story than we have been given so far. It is highly likely the Customs officials, knowing how corrupt they are, must have demanded bribe in exchange for letting the dog bypass the quarantine. The reason they didn’t defend themselves from being attacked by this arrogant Arab couple is because they were scared to escalate the situation which would have resulted in the truth about the bribe demand coming out.

    cscameron Friday, 27 July 2018 09:50 PM

Hopefully they get the death penalty going by the time these people come to trial.

What a moron of a magistrate Nelsom Karunanayake of negombo to release the Kuwaiti Couple and the Dog on personal bail when this couple had obstructed state servants whilst performing their duty. Why did not Magistrate order the Dog to be quarantined??Have the magistrate taken a santhosam or is he another Yahapalanaya appointee Moron?

    senaka Friday, 03 August 2018 05:01 PM

You should not comment without knowing the facts. Can you ever believe a dog with rabies allowed to be on boarded to a flight.

    weera Saturday, 28 July 2018 10:42 PM

There are thousands of stray dogs with diseases including who knows with rabies roaming all over in the Island. Why were they so concerned about their pet dog? It was just a show off to these visitors, nothing else.

    Gamarala Sunday, 29 July 2018 04:46 PM

They should have been remanded till the case came up for tiral. No one should be above the law not even oil rich kuwaites, They should be punished for attacking our State officials, no excuse whatsoever. If one of our passengers attacks a kuwati official they would be in jail within minutes. Why are we bending backwards to be nice to these uncouth people just beacue of oil wealth they are not to be treated differently. They should be punished accourding to the law of the land. The dog should be in quarantine, Why the special treatment????

Martin Milton Sunday, 29 July 2018 06:51 PM

Poor Customs officials! I agree where were the Security agencies while these thugs from Kuwait beat up the customs officials? Now granted bail!! great! What next a great big USD bribe to all and sundry to 'look the other way??' Go on JAIL THE B......S for at least 5 years and let them see some of the SL Prison thugs for a change to get some of their own medicine!!MM

    SAM Wednesday, 01 August 2018 11:09 AM

A video clip has been circulating regarding the incident and it looks dam ugly. Does the airport have a circulated cctv camera system to know the real fact not only for this but other incidents too? Same Prisons?

    Senaka Friday, 03 August 2018 04:57 PM

I see a different side of the story and got the details verified. This Kuwaiti lady is a mentally ill person and she has been suffering from dementia. She has been prescribed to have a pet(dog) by her side by the specialist doctors in order to recover from her illness and she in fact had produced all these doctor recommendations to the quarantine. However authorities should have considered this case in a more human manner and released that dog on humanitarian grounds rather than keeping for three days as per the law. This is where our authorities lack due diligence and and being a banker I know who my customers are based on their records and treat them accordingly. What I feel is that what ever said and done this incident triggers a bad image of this country around the world and can have a negative impact on tourism.
