Influence on the weather of the island by the Cyclonic storm “AMPHAN” was expected to reduce from tomorrow, Department of Meteorology said today.
“The Cyclonic storm ”AMPHAN” lay centered over North-west Bay of Bengal and neighborhood, at 08.30 a.m. on May 20 near latitude 19.8°N and longitude 87.7°E, about 1420 km North-east of Trincomalee, the department said.
“It is very likely to move further north-northeastwards away from the island across Bangladesh coast during the afternoon today, it added.
Meanwhile, it said there was a possibility that near shore sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo, Galle and Hambanthota might experience surges due to the effect of swell waves, having (2.0-2.5) m height.
Therefore, The department advised naval and fishing communities not to venture into the Northern Bay of Bengal sea area until May 21, 2020 evening.
