In his New Year message, former President and Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said it is his fervent hope that all Sri Lankans will be united to protect the motherland from enemy forces.
“I wish all Sri Lankans a new year full of new hope and optimism. With the dawn of 2019, it is my fervernt hope that all Sri Lankans will be able to lay aside differences based on religion and ethnicity and unite to protect our motherland from enemy forces. May all your expectations be fulfilled and all your endeavours succeed in the new year,” he said.

The country is not the land, sea and rivers. It is the people and democracy. We know from whom these have to be protected. Thanks for reminding me of these dangers.

The real threat to our country is poverty, economic deprival to weaker sections of society, favoured status to certain people and deprivation of equal rights to all citizens. It is no use talking history, creating communal rifts and neglecting these. Every Sri Lankan has a right for equal rights, prosperous future and excellent education.
