President Maithripala Sirisena is reported to have objected to a cabinet proposal to grant employment to 7,500 GCE Advanced Level qualifiers in the state sector.
The government has submitted this proposal to the regular cabinet meeting conducted on Tuesday. The government has decided to select these youths for jobs through the National Youth Services Council.
However, the President said that it would not be appropriate when there were so many unemployed graduates in the country.
Following objections by the President, the cabinet paper was deferred for consideration later. (Kelum Bandara)

RW needs votes, not a developed country. For that he can do any dirty work like he did in 87-88.instead of encouraging AL passed students for carrier oriented studies. This man wants spoil their future and absorbed them to over crowded gvt sector.

This is a correct decision. The government service is already overstaffed. Just an election stunt. Good, now no one will ask for portfolios. Well done.

These are all elections gimmicks. Why is it the government should employ them. If they are educated enough they could find employment them selves. Every government does this bad practice for the sake of the vote. After six months they will encroach the Lipton Square and the Fort Railway station with their demands.

Correct, they need to find their own employment. However if we all could recall. RW promised to create one million jobs for them during his election time.

Some A/L qualified people are better than graduates in various aspects.

Correct decision for the wrong reasons by MS. They should not be given jobs because government sector is overcrowded, not because of unemployment graduates

note that meanwhile rajith is trying to give appointments as doctors to some who failed A/L.

Recruitment into Govt. sector needs to stop... it is overstaffed at public expense as vote banks for Ministers.

MS seems to get some momentum to revive good governance which vanished with goons and seems to work towards public will rather than building vote base. Way to go..President. Don't ally yourself with goons of UNP/SLPP/UPFA and earn the respect that you lost.

MS seems to get some momentum to revive good governance which vanished.Should have been impeached and sent to gallows for breaking the constitution.

We produce too many graduates in areas where not much value addition happens to the graduate. If the A/L qualifiers are skipping university and joins the work force it's a win win for all and should be encouraged.
Samson Friday, 15 February 2019 04:15 PM
Todays graduates are not the quality it was. Jobs for A levels are different to jobs for graduates and the latter are not prepared to blue collar jobs. So the benefit of the doubt should have been given to the cabinet paper.

Strictly give preference to Uni Graduates who are without jobs at least in temporary basis area wise with their their capabilities with performance. At least to those not able to get private sector jobs due to their in capabilities than giving others.
