While claiming that the government was acting arbitrarily, Asgiri Chapter Mahanayake Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera said yesterday the government must take steps to curtail the increasing crime in the country.

“Crime is on the increase. No one is paying attention to it. Shooting incidents are reported everywhere,” he said when a group of joint opposition MPs including Namal Rajapaksa, Kanchana Wijesekara and Mahindananda Aluthgamage called on the Mahanayake Thera to brief on the janabalaya protest campaign.

They also met Ramanna Nikaya Mahanayake Ven. Napana Premasiri Thera, who said the programme of the JO was praiseworthy and wished them success. (J.A.L. Jayasinghe)

When Buddhist monks themselves act like thugs its the signal that the country has gone to dogs. First of all as the Government takes action to control the ongoing violence, the Buddhist Mahanayakes also should take action to control their own flock and to condemn openly those monks who are creating trouble.

Buddhist monk had to come forward because none of these idiots are doing the service required to the country. It has happened in the past during British rules and it will happen again in future too.so you do not be worried about it.Buddhist temple was the one which came forward whenever the country was in trouble.read the history and comment

I failed to understand what is meant "arbitrarily" in this context - I would like to know which of these synonyms is applicable ?:despotic, tyrannical, tyrannous, peremptory, summary, autocratic, dictatorial, authoritarian, draconian, autarchic, anti-democratic; oppressive, repressive, undemocratic, illiberal; imperious, domineering, high-handed; absolute, uncontrolled, unlimited, unrestrained. - pardon me - to me non of these apply.

Well said bro. Very well said

Monks need car permit so he also can do the same thing like Srilankan MPs do

    Nahfees Saturday, 01 September 2018 09:41 AM

@Arbitrary, it's all of the above

In Sri Lanka the Buddhist priests, the Muslim priests, and the Catholic priests are all actively involved in influencing their worshipers on topics outside their religion. Only places of worship in Sri Lanka which are free of politics are the the Hindu Temples. In a Hindu temple in Sri Lanka, any one can go and sit or stand peacefully with no one asking any question or suggesting answers. Occasionally there are cultural shows in Hindu temples with invited speakers even they do not get into politics. As a European I enjoy visiting the Hindu temples in Jaffna,it is so peaceful.

The Priests must avoid making statements when politicians meet. Most of the Politicians are also having questionable backgrounds. I wish to ask if the Villager Simon Singho can meet the high priest if he wished to. I guess the answer is "NO"

When people have lot of ill-gotten wealth, crime rate will keep on increasing and boosting it day by day..Stop bribery or corruption, crime late will come down.

Lord Wolfstein Saturday, 01 September 2018 10:41 AM

What a joke. Criminals meet criminals and discuss crime.

Buddhi Perera Saturday, 01 September 2018 11:20 AM

    Mahanayakes too are acting arbitrarily

WHY DID RAMANNA NIKAYA SAY THAT THE PROGRAM OF JO WAS PRAISEWORTHY. IS HE ENCOURAGING DISTURBANCE TO THE PUBLIC BY THESE USELESS RALLIES. HE SHOULD HAVE ADVISED THE DELEGATION TO SPEND THOSE MONEY HELPING THE POOR AND THE NEEDY INSTEAD OF BEING A NUISANCE TO THE PEOPLE

Sri Lankan Saturday, 01 September 2018 01:30 PM

I do not support any political party. Is it correct for a Mahanayake to say the programme of JO is praseworthy, this means disrupting the day to day of the Government and causing a loss to the Taxpayer's money is praisworthy.

Mahanayake Sir clean out your stable there are many foul eggs among your monks via DM Android App

    ravin Saturday, 01 September 2018 01:34 PM

It is very pathetic to note that venerable mahanayaka thero's keep a blind eye on protesting bikkus behave like dogs in the streets. Unbecoming nuisance to day to day lives of general public. Get involved with various nefarious activities. Why not make very effort to restrain those monks first rather than playing around politics..

Repeat, Mahanayake's Antenna is off beam

    Buddhist Saturday, 01 September 2018 06:09 PM

In my opinion the issue is not Buddhist Mahanayakes, it may be the type of Buddhism they follow. In countries where Mahayana is preached we do not see this type of thuggery by priest but in countries like Burma, Sri Lanka where Theravada is preached there is thuggery.

    Somapala Saturday, 01 September 2018 06:29 PM

What a shame for Mahanayake thero to be supporting these thieves, Namal Rajapaksa, Kanchana Wijesekara and Mahindananda Aluthgamage.

    GH Saturday, 01 September 2018 11:44 PM

    The Mahanayakes' patriotism admired.

    Dulan Sunday, 02 September 2018 07:25 PM

It is so sad to see Mahanayakes been so politicalty biased.Even if he such views in private he must respect his position and not air them
