The presidential candidate of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Gotabaya Rajapaksa handed over all the documents related to the renunciation of his US citizenship to the Elections Commission a few months ago, his Attorney Ali Sabri said today.
He scotched speculation that Mr Rajapaksa is still a US citizen. “All documents related to renouncing the US citizenship of Mr. Rajapaksa, were handed over to the Election Commission and the Commission accepted those documents,” PC Sabri told media.
Meanwhile, an official of the Elections Commission confirmed the receipt of such documents from the lawyers of Mr Rajapaksa a few months ago. “We received them three months ago,” he said.

The question is whether the US government accepted the renunciation or not. Submitting the document is not proof of renunciation.
