The Chinese company, selected to carry out the Gin Nilwala Project, has complained to President Maithripala Sirisena that a leading politician and a top official have attempted to solicit bribe to grant approval to carry out the work.

It is a multi-sector development project aimed at providing drinking water, address irrigation needs and improve the existing irrigation systems and is also expected to generate electricity and provide drinking water to the Hambantota district.

Recently, President Maithripala Sirisena had warned of politicians attempting to solicit bribes for project approvals. (Kelum Bandara)

    Ruwan Saturday, 15 September 2018 07:31 AM

People who solicit bribes on development work should be shown no mercy and if proven sentenced to life in jail. They are also traitors to the country, its people and their progress. Sadly such acts are now accepted as a norm by the people. And we keep voting hoping for change and the reality is that majority of the politicians in all parties are dirty despite their white clothes worn by them as a sign of purity.

    Jesica Saturday, 15 September 2018 11:00 AM

Who put the thumb down for this comment

    Mahila Saturday, 15 September 2018 03:20 PM

May be a false complaint to cover up their past dealings with we know whom

    Killa Saturday, 15 September 2018 02:18 PM

How does putting a false complaint hide anything? If they had anything to hide then they would avoid investigations at any cost

    Observer Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:04 AM

Oh My God! Is it still happening?

    Sriwardane Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:05 AM

First arrest the Politician and the official for attempted soliciting bribe then consider if there is any use in keeping Engineering Faculties in Sri Lanka as all the major works are done by foreign technologists.

    Puma Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:05 AM

Nooooo. This is not true. Yahapalanaya Will never do such crimes. This is just a fabrication to sling mud at PM and UNP. They're innocent.

    Saman Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:06 AM

So sad about what this country has become. Those politicos already billionaires, still seeking to loot taxpayers money.

    Mahajana Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:16 AM

Use presidential powers to demote them and introduce discipline.

Lord Wolfstein Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:22 AM

The Chinese are usually good bribe donors but this time the politician was probably too greedy.

    Mahila Saturday, 15 September 2018 03:17 PM

May be he was under the influence when he spoke to them.

    John Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:30 AM

When even the Chinese have a better idea of ethics than Sri Lankan politicians or Civil Servants then you know you have a problem.

    Perumal Saturday, 15 September 2018 02:01 PM

Exactly; Tell the names of the bastards

    Saman Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:38 AM

Provide names to the media. No point complaining to the President. He is as useless as they get.

Ronnie Bugger Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:41 AM

Might as well tell it to the birds if the identity of this 'patriotic' politician can nor be revealed.

    Citizen Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:46 AM

Why hasn't the names of the Top Politician and the TopOfficial been given publicity and also what action the President proposes to take against them?

    Jude Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:46 AM

In India, Pakistan and Bangladesh politicos ask for Bribes!!! IN SRI LANKA YOU MUST BRIBE !! Otherwise you can't get done anything!!! Yeah!!

    Cisco Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:53 AM

Nothing much different in so called Yahapalanaya.

Janaka from Matara Saturday, 15 September 2018 10:53 AM

There is a world of a difference. These things get published, and the publisher lives another day to publish more.

    Unchikun Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:55 AM

Great news and good to see you have come out of hibernation. It was you who appointed corrupt politicians who lost the election to the cabinet. Now after 3 1/2 years of looting you make this statement. Too little and too late. Why not a commission to buy time. We are fed up with the Yahapalanya .

    Alex Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:57 AM

Mr.President ,what else you need ? Why do not you stick to your words just spoken and order investigation in this fraud? We are on the watch.

    Sangaralingham Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:58 AM

Must put an end to this. Need to maintain the social and country's morality from political and others from this type of behaviour. Who knows this may happening for long time. Especially among the high and mighty

    Patriot Saturday, 15 September 2018 09:02 AM

Something fishy about this story. Everyone knows it’s duminda’s ministry that is blocking the project. And this Chinese company isn’t clean either, they were awarded the project without a proper tender process at all during Rajapaksha time, so JO can’t take political mileage out of this.

    TONY Saturday, 15 September 2018 09:17 AM

    Lal Saturday, 15 September 2018 11:24 AM

GREASE is necessary lubrication for Machines to work with less friction and more efficiently. These politicos consider themselves as also money making machines. Long gone are the day’s elected representatives served the electorate – till they are elected. These people are no statesmen; nor educated at best street vendors call themselves Mudalalis. Want returns 10 times or more of what they spent to be elected including the cost of Karavalla Buthth packet, Arraku/Kassiya shot. They have to build houses/palaces, educate the children in private schools and send them for overseas degrees.

    Mulnilarala Saturday, 15 September 2018 03:22 PM

Our country is suffering from three serious illness, now it has become a real epidemic causing fear in everyone's mind: They are 1. Corruption 2. Gun culture and 3.Underworld and its drug activity. If these three dangerous illness attended to by the government there is no point we have a government for just for the name sake. This is the time we general public should keep our eyes wide open and save our motherland from this disaster. We will be cursed by generation to come, Wake up now!

    Lakmal Saturday, 15 September 2018 06:23 PM

The President should disclose these two names to the media. Otherwise people will think President is covering up. There are only two ministries relevant to this project. One is Mahaweli which is under President and the other one is irrigation which is under Duminda Dissanayake. I don't think these two would have asked for bribe's. They are very clean politicians

    Nilame Saturday, 15 September 2018 07:18 PM

Why not publishing the politician asked bribe on this project? sure it’ll not happen because we’re living in SL

    Lanka Saturday, 15 September 2018 07:29 PM

Poor country!! How can it get developed with these crooks?

Gummay Baiyya Saturday, 15 September 2018 08:39 PM

Are the Chinese this dumb to complain to a person who is also in the bribe taking? Usually the politico's and officials are the top mans' bribe soliciting front runners! They are all in it to steal and plunder the country.

    Jan Saturday, 15 September 2018 09:14 PM

past 70 YEARS BOTH parties how much money has taken as Bribes After this government comes to power when highlighted corruption wrong doers freely living Nothing happened to any of them

    Pradeep Saturday, 15 September 2018 10:27 PM

It seems the Election temperature is heating up, and every one tries to point the finger at the other, claiming they are cleaner. In the near past, it is the President's man at the top of administration caught receiving bribe from an Indian investor. What is the assurance that the Chinese are saying the truth, given their history during the past regime. Every news item has to be considered with caution.

    Ghost Sunday, 16 September 2018 08:23 AM

Maybe the Chinese Co. lost at playing Chinese checkers and became sour losers!!!

    Chanaka Sunday, 16 September 2018 08:34 AM

When a police Sargent or a Gramasewaka takes a bribe of RS.1000 they are put to jail and these high level politicians seek bribes they are told " son don't do it again "! Banana Republic!!
