A SriLankan Airlines flight UL554 from Frankfurt to Colombo was delayed by 15 hours due to late arrival of a flight crew member, SriLankan Airlines sources said.

The airline said it expects the flight to depart at 0400 UTC today once Frankfurt airport reopens after the scheduled night time closure.

“Due to unavailability of a flight crew member, the aircraft was unable to leave Frankfurt as scheduled last afternoon. All passengers affected by the delay have been provided with meals and accommodation. They will also be compensated as per EU regulations,” a spokesman for the airline said.

They are intentionally ruining the national airline with the intention of selling it off to foreigners

    Thushara Saturday, 20 August 2016 01:34 PM

This shows how smoothly running our national carrier, irresponsibility to the max, should fired this guy immediately and get the expenses from him/her

    ruwan Saturday, 20 August 2016 01:34 PM

Before start firing need to check the reasons behind delay. It would have been better keep him at frankfurt and back to SL if this is due to personal disobedience. Manager should be liable for financial loss due to poor decision making. via DM Android App

Don't we have a stand-by crew of one or two crew members in case of emergencies? What if someone falls sick at the last minute? We are operating an international airline like a "kade business". Shameful and very unprofessional.

    Bala Saturday, 20 August 2016 01:54 PM

Learn airline regulations. You cannot start international flight without minimum stipulated crew. How can you get crew at short notice to leave one behind.Manager has nothing to do in this case.

    Dee Saturday, 20 August 2016 02:11 PM

Please privatise this lossmaking entity. Such crew members should be sacked. Opps sorry this is yahapalana, need to look into grounds such as legal, humanitarian and cultural etc.

    Absolutely Saturday, 20 August 2016 02:22 PM

Well said, Thushara. It is a mistake in the human resource recruitment process where incompetent people have been absorbed into the airline.

    Asanka Saturday, 20 August 2016 02:43 PM

This is a vary shameful incident for both airline and SL, I am not sure how exactly the rule is, in my opinion if there is a minimum crew then definitely a plan carries more than minimum crew, so taking off without one member is not a issue expect he is a key member. we should demand stringent action against this fella, and which will be a lesson for others.

It is easy for us laymans to pretend to be "industry experts". Aviation is a complex topic. I'm sure they did what was best and more importantly safe in that situation. After all SriLankan has a 100% safety record!

    Labby Saturday, 20 August 2016 03:12 PM

Appropriate action should be taken against this staff for not reporting for duty. The repercussions and consequences of this delay, however, should be the responsibility of the airline's management. Why wasn't there back-up staff?

    Sunil Saturday, 20 August 2016 04:03 PM

Safety records does not give weight because we have minimum number of airlines. Also escaped during several critical mishaps.

    Sim Saturday, 20 August 2016 04:16 PM

Did the country manager check with the person concerned? What was holding him up for 15 hours

Well .... This was the pilot who got delayed. So no pilot no take off......

Such things never happened during MR's time....

    Gamaya Saturday, 20 August 2016 07:08 PM

This crew member came in late because he had a lot of pull and because of this he cannot be fired. He must have a close connection to a politician in power

    Foot the bill; ENOUGH?

podi seeya Saturday, 20 August 2016 09:08 PM

Relax boys, let us wait until we know what really happened. It's our national weakness we come into conclusion even before the story is fully narrated. This is another example. Remember. This is the first instance. One mistake, so it's not fair.

    siva Saturday, 20 August 2016 09:10 PM

Apart from the absence of the crew member one must also acknowledge the fact that it's an airport which is closed at night that is upto 12 hours out of 15 hours of delay.

    Gihan Saturday, 20 August 2016 09:18 PM

This is unbelievable .This is not the first time this pilot has done this . Do you know why . Everyone in the Airline knows who he is . Why has the CAASL not suspended his Licence and the Flight operations management to terminated him
