Former Sri Lanka Cricketer Roshan Mahanama today said that some individuals closely involved in politics have taken sports in Sri Lanka for a joke.
Speaking at an event held at the National Olympic Committee headquarters in Colombo to commemorate the International Olympic Day, Mahanama said that certain countries are introduced to the world by sportsmen and women.
"Therefore the impact of sports to the society cannot be ignored. However I must especially note that a few who are closely engaged in politics have taken sports for a joke. I don't believe that sports should be taken for granted," he said.
"We have a responsibility to develop sports and take it across the country for the future generations. That is our duty," Mahanama added. (Kalani Kumarasinghe)
