The Locomotive Engine Operators’ Union (LEOU), will launch an indefinite strike from midnight tomorrow against the violation of recruitment procedures through the enrolment of engine drivers of over 45 years of age.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, LEOU Secretary Indika Dodangoda said there was no need of recruiting additional engine drivers. The recruits rejected by the Public Service Commission had been made against employment recruitment procedures, he said.
“The vacancies were called for in 2013 and 2014 without mentioning an age limit. Later, the Transport Ministry Secretary and the General Manager Railways (GMR) went against relevant procedures by making these recruitments,” he said, adding that 12 individuals who were selected were over 45 years of age.
“The recruitment age limit is 45 years. As a union, we informed the GMR about our decision. We will launch an indefinite strike until the illegal recruits are removed,” he said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)

New Recruits, yes, less overtime. The engine drivers earn a massive paycheck due to overtime.
