Election Commission’s duty is to hold elections, not to postpone: Prasanna

The Election Commission was appointed to hold elections and not to postpone them and it is their responsibility to hold the General Elections in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Health Sector, Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said today.

He said that the opposition is trying to summon the old parliament not out of love for the people but to use parliamentary power to hamper the measures taken by the President and the Prime Minister.

“The Election Commission was appointed to hold elections. The Commission's responsibility is to ensure that elections are held appropriately under any circumstances. As such, the Elections Commission cannot postpone the General Elections. All they have to do is consult with the health authorities and prepare a mechanism to hold the election as scheduled”, the minister said at a meeting with Minuwangoda Urban Council members.

He said the Election Commission cannot undermine the democratic rights of the people because the commission was appointed to protect the voting rights of the people.

“According to the health authorities, no COVID-19 patients were found in the society for the past 15 days. We, as a government, have done everything we can to control the coronavirus,’ he said. (Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)

I think it's time for the population of the country to come out and bring a revolution to change all the 225 from the parliament. Things seems to be extremely inhumane. Every step taken shows that it is for the sake of power and money. Our country has gone down to zero in terms of productivity due to unplanned closure of all economic activities over the past 2 months. No thought was given to maintain or support the local businesses and people living in out station areas. Even the 5000 was not distributed to a vast majority of the population. People had to beg for the 5000. Look at other nations and see how they are progressing even during a time like this. See how they have converted a pandemic like threat into an opportunity. See how governments are helping out the citizens of their countries. What a shame Sri Lanka. It's so sad to see this beautiful country being looted and vandalised by some crooks who have the power in their hands.
