Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa said today it was not appropriate to allow an external body such as the police to investigate the incident that occurred in parliament last November as it happened inside the chamber.

He told Parliament that the Speaker had powers to take action against the MPs involved in the incident and added that it was not proper to allow the police to intervene.

"This happened in the chamber. If it happened outside, I will have different opinion," he said.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said there was an investigation carried out by the police in addition to the internal investigation carried out by a committee appointed by Parliament.

He said police was carrying out a separate investigation into the assault by MPs on police personnel who were on duty that day and that he could not intervene in the police investigations.

MP S.B. Dissanayake said the matter should be discussed at the party leaders meeting and an investigation should be carried out by the Parliament privileges committee.

House Leader Lakshman Kiriella said the law of the country was superior and that parliamenary privileges could not supersede the law of the country. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Why.. law of the land is not applicable ther?

    Casanova Saturday, 23 February 2019 10:59 AM

This is the problem with our politicians, they think that they are above the law.

Lahin Kasenof Saturday, 23 February 2019 11:01 AM

A very strange statement by MR. Does it mean that if an MP kills someone inside parliament, the police should not or cannot do anything about this!!!

MODA BURUWA Saturday, 23 February 2019 11:04 AM

WHY SCARED . HOW YOUR DICIPLES BEHAVE .

    Yehiya Saturday, 23 February 2019 11:04 AM

Parliament is totally tax payers money. Need a civilized culture. Bring to court.

    udaya Saturday, 23 February 2019 11:08 AM

Is this the person asking vote for him, law should be equal and fair for all Sri lankans, regardless of work place.

    Buwa Saturday, 23 February 2019 11:38 AM

Why not? Are they above law?

Raju Mathiaz Saturday, 23 February 2019 11:42 AM

House leader Hon Laksham Kiriella is absolutely right. The police should investigate the Parliamentary thugs.

    Samsa Saturday, 23 February 2019 12:19 PM

To be fair, don’t let the police incidents outside parliament too.

    HP Saturday, 23 February 2019 12:20 PM

Wait for a politician under the influence of drugs to cause serious injury or death. I wish to ask the Leader of Opposition if the Politicians are still exempted from the laws of the land

    meeharaka Saturday, 23 February 2019 12:30 PM

So if a murder happens inside the chamber, it shouldn't be handed over to the police?

Stunned Citizen Saturday, 23 February 2019 12:37 PM

You have an opinion for everything! Retire and dont comeback, we dont want you or your kith and kin.

    Sarath Saturday, 23 February 2019 12:40 PM

parliament can probe breach of parliamentary privileges. However if a criminal act is committed, then the police can investigate. There is no immunity for criminal acts committed in parliament. Surely MR as a lawyer and veteran politician should know this basic principle!!!

    Blair Saturday, 23 February 2019 12:44 PM

Why not, the opp. leader. Is it not a matter under the law of the land.

    C.K.Lankaputhra Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:04 PM

    Shameless politician.

    ShakeSpear Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:15 PM

Cold feet and disgraceful. The man was present in parliament when the saga unfolded. He and his son was the master mind of this disgraceful act. The rule would apply to all. This is why this budding dictator criticizes the Constitutional Council. This is need to be kept out of the legislature and all forces need to unit NOW!

Holmung Pee Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:18 PM

There's little regard for the rule of law.. It's a sad state of affairs around most corners. Look at the bookie chappie who runs SL Cricket? He even managed to buy his way up to being dpty speaker of parliament ?! How low can we go ?!

    rew Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:20 PM

Naturally, don't take action against my boys - typical expectation

    Modaya Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:47 PM

Parliament is a public place owned by the people, not your private place.

    abc Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:52 PM

You probably want a relative to investigate it, like during your time

Ronnie Bugger Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:54 PM

Chamber, my foot. This man is an Sychophant, nothing less. Lowly MR, if you do not know what the word means, look it up, twit.

    upi Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:59 PM

    Mr. do not talk bullshit

    Diogenes Saturday, 23 February 2019 02:13 PM

Why? Because your people got involved in most unparliamentary acts?

    Mandayan Saturday, 23 February 2019 02:25 PM

Really? If the attack is limited to MPs that’s fine, but they attacked the external officers, the Police who came in to maintained peace and order.

    GENE Saturday, 23 February 2019 02:40 PM

If someone was killed in the house are we to get Scotland Yard or FBI to investigate.

    Gihan Saturday, 23 February 2019 02:47 PM

He would say that knowing most of the culprits were from his party!

    rohantha Saturday, 23 February 2019 03:24 PM

what Bunkum. So what will happen if one of those thugs kill another in side the chamber....

    S K Muthukumara Saturday, 23 February 2019 03:40 PM

Throughout MR's slogan has been "police should not investigate any incident"

    SL Saturday, 23 February 2019 03:52 PM

If you 225 idiots do not want any probe do not behave like savages inside the chamber , discrediting the mother lanka .

Moda Pusa Saturday, 23 February 2019 03:56 PM

So does parliamentary privileged permit an MP to kill someone inside the Chambers and not have the police investigate???

    vithura Saturday, 23 February 2019 05:16 PM

What an irresponsible and worrisome statement made by someone who had been the president of this country and clearly shows his disdain to the rule of law. Had there been grievous bodily harm or even loss of life of any MP resulting from this unprecedented violence unleashed by this unruly mob, what would the situation be then, would he still take same position. Regardless of where the said violence occurred, the law of the land should apply and the police must investigate the matter, period.

    Shiran Saturday, 23 February 2019 05:25 PM

We created a Constitution Council with members of the Ministers. All of you are saying it is politizied. MR always has a habit of avoiding legale process of everything. If found guilty they should not be allowed to contest another Parliament for two terms.

    Samson Saturday, 23 February 2019 07:39 PM

Are parliamentary thugs above the law?

Untouchable SriLanken latest trade mark Saturday, 23 February 2019 09:36 PM

    Nimal Saturday, 23 February 2019 10:51 PM

If you are a true leader, punish all those who set a very bad example to the entire country in the Parliament without white washing them. As citizens of this country we don't condone them.

    Perumal Sunday, 24 February 2019 09:04 AM

He is just a breeder, not a leader.

    Lakminiha Saturday, 23 February 2019 11:04 PM

Don't worry, they won't question you as to why you remained as a spectator within the chamber while your artists performed what you directed.

    rasamn Sunday, 24 February 2019 12:33 AM

if the police is an independent body in Sri Lanka, there is nothing wrong investigation carrying out by the police as long as there is no interference by any political parties

    IVJ Sunday, 24 February 2019 01:58 AM

MR, you seem to have lost your memory. When the speaker tried to handle the situation, you joined the thugs and attacked him. Now you are saying the speaker should manage it. You are a disgrace, even as a father ! This is what you teach your children ?

    ravin Sunday, 24 February 2019 04:39 AM

Because majority of them belong to the party which was formed with your blessings?

    Ranabahu Sunday, 24 February 2019 10:46 AM

Why NOT Police..?, You want it to be handled in "White Van" way...???

    CITIZEN Sunday, 24 February 2019 12:02 PM

Parliamentary privileges don't cover conduct as thugs; hooligans, drunkards etc. Law of the land should prevail as citizens.

JK hatton Sunday, 24 February 2019 02:09 PM

This is why Rajapakse is popular among his people. He will go to any extent to bury the investigation. Please vote for Rajapakse and his representatives.

    Pushpa Sunday, 24 February 2019 02:45 PM

Which part of the constitution this man talking about? Now I have my suspicion whether this man a lawyer.

    saman Sunday, 24 February 2019 10:55 PM

Asoka jayaweera Monday, 25 February 2019 09:55 AM

it is strange that in all controversial issues, no Rajapakses are involved.

    gamini Monday, 25 February 2019 10:35 AM

and fools in this country want this treacherous man back in power????

    Saku Monday, 25 February 2019 04:01 PM

Parliament Privileges Committee? What rubbish is this? The privilege we voted you into is not to abuse each other like monkeys! It's for you to make intelligent decisions on behalf of the citizens of this country.
