Details have emerged about the man shown holding a dead peacock in one hand and an airgun in the other, which went viral on social media, Wildlife Conservation Department spokesperson Hasini Sarathchandra said today.
According to the man’s wife's statement, which was recorded by the Wennapuwa Police, her husband had not shot the peacock.
“The peacock was accidentally knocked down by our vehicle while we were on our way to attend Mass at Wennapuwa Church last year. After knocking it down, my husband lifted the dead peacock by its neck while holding the air gun in his other hand. He threw the peacock into the jungle before attending Mass. My husband is now working in Italy. This photo was taken last year,” the wife said in her statement to the police. “We keep an airgun to scare away animals which stray into our property because we have not yet fitted the doors and windows of our house.
The man was a resident of Lunuwila in Wennappuwa. (Chaturanga Pradeep)

Who would believe this kind of a fairy tale? Going to church? Air gun? Sounds so true isn't it? Is the authorities happy with that explanation?

I am no Christian, but do they actually go to mass dressed like THAT? And look at the gleeful face. Even the carcass of a cat or dog on the road makes us feel sad. If our vehicle actually hit one, we would feel terrible. Is that the look on his face?
KJ Wednesday, 30 March 2016 11:46 AM
Let's back to base.. do you have a license to hold this gun?
DP Wednesday, 30 March 2016 11:42 AM

In Wennappuwa,( Wayamba) area there are no peacocks available. This peacock must have been hunted somewhere else.

There are no peacocks on roads in Wennappuwa. This woman should have found a better lie to tell.
Vernon Tuesday, 29 March 2016 09:49 PM
Wife's story is good for "Konde Bandapu Chinunnta". (1) Who goes to church with an air gun? (2) Wennappuwa people do not go to church in such attire (3) Never heard of peacocks in Wennappuwa. (4) The photo is nowhere near a road, but inside some shed (5) There are no jungles in Wennappuwa
gadda Tuesday, 29 March 2016 09:43 PM
The gun looks like a shot gun to me and if her story was true then it was on a road he was holding the animal. This look like a shed and for sure he hunted the animal.

Why hold a Airgun if the peacock had an accident?
Aquarius Tuesday, 29 March 2016 09:04 PM
The photo with the man and the air gun is definitely not on a road after an accident. He is posing for the photo in a different place - probabaly his home or some other home environment. The wife's story is bizzare.
