A police constable was reported missing after he was snatched away by a crocodile in the Nilwala River this morning, police said.
They said the tragedy occurred when the constable attempted to retrieve his mobile phone which had fallen into the river.
The victim, Athula Vadambi aged 54, is a resident of Thihagoda, Bandaththara.
Vadambi, who was attached to the Slave-Island police, had already submitted documents for his retirement due to a health condition.
A joint search operation was launched by the officials at the Disaster Management Centre and the Sri Lanka Navy. (Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk)
