President Maithripala Sirisena has raised concerns about the mushrooming of Chinese shops throughout the country, at the recently held Cabinet meeting.

Chinese shops have increased in numbers in Colombo and Kandy and convening of Chinese shop owners to Sugathadasa Stadium on Tuesday (06) is an disadvantage to the local shop owners, President has told the Cabinet.

The actions taken by the former Minister of Finance has distanced the minor shop owners of the country from the government with displeasure, he has further told the Cabinet.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has reminded that opening of Chinese shops had begun from 2001. (Dayaseeli Liyanage)

This president is clueless and doesn’t he have burning problems in this country to talk about?

Similarly army opening shops in North and East is a disadvantage to the local shop owners. Periannan

To prez: Just visit major tourist locations in SL. There are huge number of Chinese Owned hotels and restaurants. Chinese tourists come and stay in these hotels and dine. Then they go to places in SL with a Chines guide. Finally all the foreign income the Chinese bring to SL is taken back to CHINA.

All the loans taken from China for Airport and Port and what went to the pockets also has to go back to china with interest !!!

What the President said about the mushrooming of Chinese shops is absolutely true but what is puzzling is why he had to make the statement in public instead of dealing with these matters privately. Now the nasty Indian Intelligence could easily exploit this situation and create hostilities against the Chinese in Sri Lanka.

    BuffaloaCitizen Monday, 05 March 2018 09:24 AM

Not at all, the Indians must be laughing at what is happening here including selling the sovereignty of the country for 99 years in Hambantota.

All you srilankans are jealous looking at Chinese doing well. Look at the world around they are all blessed. We goofs only want to point fingers and waste time taking holidays.

    "China Street" mushrooming...not very far.....

    XXX Monday, 05 March 2018 08:01 AM

Maybe the Chinese are doing business better than the locals. No wonder they can tap into our consumer market.

    ravin Monday, 05 March 2018 08:05 AM

Anywhere in the world where Chinese people live they have Chinese grocery stores. Not like many other countrymen they always prefer to eat their food type and hardly get adopted to other types. In SL we have Chinese guys doing construction (development work) every corner. Though you see Chinese eateries everywhere it is only a marketing gimmick use by owners. For example, few years back there were many shops in Maradana area was famous, where they sell clothing materials and had dentist shops own and manage by Chinese.

Unfortunately this president has no clue of what is beneficial and what needs to be focused to develop the nation. He is trying to please the gallery and ends up looking completely foolish. If you don;t want others to open shops, then have a national policy for professionals, entrepreneurs and investors from overseas to invest or do business in SL. No point talking nonsense and drive away friendly nations when we need them the most. Look at countries like India, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam and Laos etc etc. We have a really stupid president and a government.

Our country has fallen into a position of a prostitute. It caters to everybody who wishes to use it for any purpose. No proper rules and regulations governing some businesses. Or if there are rules they are ignored by the entrepreneurs. We have experienced in the recent past that some of these Chinese shops

Chinese population is bursting in the seams and we are playing coy with them. Even powerful western countries are struggling to control the export of Chinese citizens but third world countries in Africa and Asia took them in thanks to some greedy politicians who want to amass wealth at any cost..

its very common when chinees get a chance - you were focusing on Muslim who were born in the same and lived more than 1500 years. Chinees take only few years screw everything just wait and see. Even Australia is unable to control . our children will be used as slaves very soon - Where is Bloody Ranawaka ....

    Ahmed Monday, 05 March 2018 03:00 PM

and dont forget muslims married local lankan women. its funny to see some sri lankans looking at muslims like muslims came here yesterday sri lankans muslims are citizens of sri lanka and they are not living in lanka and they are not foreigners who live in sri lanka with a visa

    lankan Monday, 05 March 2018 09:40 AM

rather than going public and create unnecessary fear why cant the president issue a private directive to check all chinese shops weather they are legal or illegal and take action ? another MILO fiasco.

    BuffaloaCitizen Monday, 05 March 2018 09:59 AM

The Sinhalese have a phobia, everybody other than a Sinhalese are a threat to them.

    kamal Monday, 05 March 2018 03:42 PM

President must speak and behave like a president and not like a gramasevaka. Is this a national issue ?

    Ajja Monday, 05 March 2018 05:43 PM

Ape unge Nohakiyawata Cheenu monawa karannada???

    Mason Monday, 05 March 2018 06:06 PM

If this is not undone soon, the entire trade will be in the hands of the Chinese. We will have to converse in Chinese, and it will not be surprising if the government decides to teach Chinese as a subject. SALE OF SRI LAANKA is taking place in bits and pieces, slowly but SURELY.

dinesh withanage Tuesday, 06 March 2018 01:59 PM

mother lanka is being prostituted for decades as a result of liberal policies so chinese shops are not a serious issue
