In response to Archbishop Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith’s remarks that human rights had become the religion among the Western nations, Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera said the Cardinal seems to got things wrong in trying to be a populist.

In a tweet, the Minister said, “The need for Human Rights was an outcome of the marauding religious zealots of the Inquisition and the Crusades, where non believers were massacred "En-Bloc". Pity, the Cardinal always seems to get things wrong in trying to be a populist,”

The Cardinal had expressed his views while attending the morning service of the St. Matthew’s Roman Catholic Church in Ekala on Sunday.

I think what the Rev. Cardinal wanted to put across was the idea that Western Powers were unreasonably harping on human rights and harassing small countries like us; where I presume he is correct. But the controversy was when religion was dragged in. But the Minister is a politician (much tainted at that) and he pretends that being populist is wrong, except for politicians.

99% monks and priests are politicians, they don't follow their religions.they are preachers only, not practisioners.

I agree with the Hon. Minister.

though I am not a catholic, but proud of your free thinking sermons, which helps to guild fellow humans with analytical mind to right path, and your sermons never accept new life of gay, which is against the scripture

Organised religion, is the least qualified to preach about human rights. Crucades is one example, you can find plenty more massacres, genocides commanded by god himself in the old testament. But i doubt the crucades was the birth cry of human rights.

There are catholics fully behind you on this. This cardinal is a toital embarassment. It's high time he got a hard rap on the knuckles from the Vatican.

Happy to see a response like this from a sri Lankan minister

What the Rev Cardinal meant is that west is using human rights as a tool.

Ha Ha... Finally at least he reads history. That's a plus point. Even in an era which developed countries also ditching religions, Mangala brags about European medieval battles. How funny.... Focus on your own battle dear.. Isn't the dollar crusading and the rupee is getting slaughtered by the Dollar???..... :)
