The body of black leopard, who died after being rescued in the Laxapana Estate, Nallathanniya while trapped in a snare, is to be sent to the Colombo National Museum, Wildlife Conservation Department Director General M.G.C. Sooriyabandara said.

He told Daily Mirror that the decision had been taken upon a request made by the Ministry of Buddha Sasana & Religious Affairs to the Wildlife Ministry. "The decision to send the body of black leopard to Museum will be finalised once the court proceedings into the death of leopard are over," the Director General said.

Moreover, he said a team from Peradeniya University is to examine the leopard and conduct a DNA analysis. "This will help uncover a lot of scientific information about the black leopard," he said. The black tiger died while being treated at the Elephant Transit Home at Udawalawe on May 29.

The animal was to be released to the Sri Pada forest reserve, its natural habitat after it fully recovers. But the leopard died in the morning from its wounds. The black leopard was trapped in a snare at Walamale in the Laxapana Estate, Nallathanniya and was rescued by the Wildlife officials.(Sheain Fernandopulle)

It also died because people were taking videos of it in a cage and stressing the poor injured animal at the hospital. Don't mock the creature by parading it in the museum now for a buck.

Still stupid and will always be stupid now they want too parade this poor dead animal for all to see what? the failure of the officials who treated this suffering animal like all other things this is one example the people will never change of this bleeding country and will bleed till we all perish.

Who or what killed the Black Panther ? The snare or the DWC through negligence and lack of proper care flowing from poor facilities at the Hospital for the treatment of sick and injured animals. Had the animal been released to the jungle soon after it was rescued from the snare it might have survived for a longer period. What aggravated its condition was the tiresome journey to the Hospital and confinement in a small primitive cage. A Public inquiry must be help to probe what went wrong. Sri Lanka has lost two rare black panthers within a period of four (4) months. This is a national tragedy and disgrace for the country in failing to protect endangered animals. If he was freed from the snare and let go back to the woods, he would have been alive by now. I saw how some random person poked his finger in to the wound and twirled around the wound. Why? A purposeful infection method?
