Cabinet reshuffle is a must: Amaraweera

UPFA General Secretary and Minister, Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday stressed the need for a cabinet reshuffle and said if this did not happen, his party would reconsider being in the government.

“A Cabinet reshuffle is a must. It will be done by President Maithripala Sirisena in consultation with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. The SLFP is keen to have it carried out as early as possible because all SLFP members, party supporters and the public are expecting it,” he said .

The minister said it was a misconception to believe that the portfolios assigned to the UNP should be reshuffled among its members and those assigned to the SLFP reshuffled among its members.

“There is no such agreement between the SLFP and the UNP. President Sirisena has the constitutional authority to appoint any SLFP or UNP member to any of the portfolios after consulting the Prime Minister," he said adding that the President and the Prime Minister had agreed to a reshuffle and the SLFP was insisting that it be carried out as early as possible. Mr. Minister, you and your SLFP party will be the losers, if you break up your party, understand. That will lead for a land side victory to UNP in all forth-coming elections.

Mr. Minister, you have forgotten because of RW and UNP you guys became Ministers and Deputy Ministers, other-wise, all you rotters would have been in the streets like JO rotters.

Easily said than done. Remember that it was not SLFP who brought the president to power. As we all know it was the UNP who led the campaign. Even in the parliament they hold more seats than SLFP including the JO lot. Good luck to president and the PM to do this reshuffle successfully.

Mangala Samaraweera has earned tremendous international goodwill for Sri Lanka and this Govt. A more recent example is the EU GSP victory for which Mangala Samaraweera was greatly responsible. It would be a huge mistake to replace Mangala. The President would be better advised not to give into every bit of bickering by those of questionable loyalty , but to explain to his dissidents the value, including economic value, which Mangala has brought to the table.
