All sects of Buddhism including the Asgiriya and the Malwathu chapters were objecting to introduce a new constitution to Sri Lanka, Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.

He expressed these views when he visited to pay last homage to Mahanayaka of Ramannaa chapter Ven. Nagoda Amarawansa Thero.

“Even when the clergy had announced that there is no need of a new constitution, the government pays no attention on them and continues with the way they wanted and added a journey without the blessing of Mahanayaka theros would have no success,” he said.

He further said the Archbishop of Colombo had also cautioned the government when introducing a new constitution. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Can someone tell me who is running the country,The sanga or the cabinet?

Bubble Banda Tuesday, 24 October 2017 01:05 PM

For MR, the Sanga is running the country that is why he is bribing sanga in millions.

How Many of these Sects Got together to have a intellectual discussion on the Pros and Cons of a New constitution, None. The Top Political Mafia Monks make a decision and everyone must obey them. Not Buddhism or Democracy

    Ranjith Tuesday, 24 October 2017 12:09 PM

Bring in the New Constitution that will serve all human beings living in the country to have equal rights and have a fair go for all. Let us forget all the things that divide us - caste, religion, race, school, etc.. Buddhist priests should listen to what Buddha said and not to what the racist leaders say.

    BV Tuesday, 24 October 2017 12:10 PM

I'm just thinking , Have we voted in you or the Asgiriya and Malwattha chapters to rule this country ?

    Gune Tuesday, 24 October 2017 12:16 PM

Dear MR, I don't see see any reason or role for clergy to be the deciders of a country's constitution. You are the least religious person by conduct. So why are you running after clergy??? All your temple visits for are for show only whilst your break all Buddhists principles. To start with don't steal. Secondly Don't create racial disharmony. Thirdly Don't be vindictive

    daya Tuesday, 24 October 2017 01:05 PM

Sangha should be in the Temples. They have nothing to do in Constitution making

    Dr. A.C.B. Jayaweera Tuesday, 24 October 2017 01:07 PM

Mahinda if it is your own money you won't lavishly spend to the Sanga, but as it is your Robbed money from the Looted fund, you just throw the money and playing games. How long it will last?

    Dulip Tuesday, 24 October 2017 01:44 PM

MR didn't care two hoots when the priests requested him not to imprison Gen. Fonseka!

    wickrama Tuesday, 24 October 2017 01:56 PM

Buddhist monks involvement in administration exists for past 2500 years as a tradition and that is how the united country continued. If anybody thinks to change it it would be a dream. Mahasanga in Sri Lanka is not only for meditation and they are the force behind the nation for avoiding disastrous situation like we are facing.

    alex Tuesday, 24 October 2017 03:33 PM

it is not involvement, it is called interference

    Mandy Tuesday, 24 October 2017 04:27 PM

Ah but after listening to MR and Mahanayakes is the country not a total disaster as it is.

MR, now wants to instigate racism and want to increase his vote bank. The proposed constitution clearly states unitary state, one country, no division, Top place for buddhism etc... even Mr. sampathan has made it clear. Now why shed crocodile tears. This is a very lengthy subject, only constitutional lawyers understand it very clearly. I think the maha sanga has not been briefed properly or they have bee misled by JO.

COME FORWARD - DO NOT HIDE BEHIND OTHERS Tuesday, 24 October 2017 02:34 PM

If you have a back bone - accept the challenge thrown to you by AKD and debate the issue with the JVP leader. - this will enhance your image "as the saviour of the nation" - and further more - you would be reinforcing the view of the Sangha, You have no excuse to back out,

    Ajith Tuesday, 24 October 2017 02:41 PM

Your two last election manifestos has constitution change to eliminate executive president ship. Did not your consult them don't shed tears now.

Sri Wickrema Tuesday, 24 October 2017 02:52 PM

MR agrees to abolish executive presidency and at the same time refuses new constitution. What a cynic!

    Hautaum Tuesday, 24 October 2017 03:12 PM

Very simple, go for referendum in North and East,

    sunethra Tuesday, 24 October 2017 03:35 PM

from when was MR appointed as the sole representative of the Maha Sangha?

    silva Tuesday, 24 October 2017 03:36 PM

did you consult the Maha Sangha when you amended the constitution 19 solely to extend your term of Presidency
