Buddhists sects oppose for new constitution - MR

All sects of Buddhism including the Asgiriya and the Malwathu chapters were objecting to introduce a new constitution to Sri Lanka, Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday.

He expressed these views when he visited to pay last homage to Mahanayaka of Ramannaa chapter Ven. Nagoda Amarawansa Thero.

“Even when the clergy had announced that there is no need of a new constitution, the government pays no attention on them and continues with the way they wanted and added a journey without the blessing of Mahanayaka theros would have no success,” he said.

He further said the Archbishop of Colombo had also cautioned the government when introducing a new constitution. (Sheain Fernandopulle)

Bring in the New Constitution that will serve all human beings living in the country to have equal rights and have a fair go for all. Let us forget all the things that divide us - caste, religion, race, school, etc.. Buddhist priests should listen to what Buddha said and not to what the racist leaders say.

Dear MR, I don't see see any reason or role for clergy to be the deciders of a country's constitution. You are the least religious person by conduct.So why are you running after clergy??? Buddhist monks involvement in administration exists for past 2500 years as a tradition and that is how the united country continued. If anybody thinks to change it it would be a dream. Mahasanga in Sri Lanka is not only for meditation and they are the force behind the nation for avoiding disastrous situation like we are facing.

MR, now wants to instigate racism and want to increase his vote bank. The proposed constitution clearly states unitary state, one country, no division, Top place for buddhism etc... even Mr. sampathan has made it clear. Now why shed crocodile tears. This is a very lengthy subject, only constitutional lawyers understand it very clearly. I think the maha sanga has not been briefed properly or they have bee misled by JO.
