Four Buddhist and animal rights organizations called for a ban on meat consumption in Sri Lanka on Mondays and urged all Buddhists in the country to refrain from eating animal products during the month of May when Vesak is celebrated.

The heads of these organizations -Anagarika Dharamapala Humanitarian Foundation, Dharma Voices for Animals (DVA) , Bodhi Raja Foundation and Youth Non-vilolent Movement- told a news conference that they requested all people of Sri Lanka to refrain from eating meat on Mondays and all Buddhists to become vegetarians during the month of May as a first step towards converting Sri Lanka into a non meat-eating society.

Senior member of the Anagarika Dharamapala Humanitarian Foundation Dr Lanka Jayasuriya Dissanayake said the objective of the organizations that have come together was create a meatless society. “As a first step towards creating a meatless society, we would like to call all Sri Lankans to refrain from eating meat on Mondays and all Buddhists to become vegetarians during the month of Vesak. Ms. Dissanayake, the daughter of Speaker Karu Jayasuriya and the spouse of Minister Navin Dissanayake, said the organizations would also campaign to educate people to prepare a healthy meals for alms . She made this request by revealing that research had confirmed that 75 percent of local Buddhist monks suffered from diabetics.

DVA Board Member Venerable Peradeniye Sathindriya Thera said the number of cattle heads slaughtered in Sri Lanka had been reduced to 170,000 in 2016 compared to 200,000 in 2013. However he said the cattle slaughter was high in the East particularly in Batticaloa and Ampara Districts. He said WHO had affirmed that meat consumption had been a major cause of cancer and other noncommunicable diseases later.

Venerable Ahangama Ananda Thera said the petition signed by nearly one million people during the 2600th Buddha Jayanthi calling for the ban on cattle slaughter had not been implemented. He said the organizations would fight for it in the future. “Catholic, Christian and Islamic priests who saw the video clips we showed to the public during the Buddha Jayanthi were convinced and they signed the petition together with us,” he said.

Dr Damayanthi Perera a professional Dietician said the research in which she too has been involved had revealed that the conclusion that meat consumption had been the number one cause of cancer. Also she said the notion that milk is essential for the growth of humans right throughout had been proven wrong as well. Besides she said it is ironic that human beings are dependent on other animals for milk. Dr Perera said research had also confirmed that animal parts such as eyes of cattle are being used for various meat products such as sausages. ‘It is also important to prevent animal farming business that would come to Sri Lanka in the form of foreign direct investments,” she added. Ven. Sir. I have nothing against your movement. However, Supreme Lord Buddha never tried to stop this in India. Neither advised us to be Vegetarians

Also tell the incoming meat-eating tourists to go to neighboring countries for their three meals. Arrange shuttle flight for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Suneth Perera Friday, 27 October 2017 08:50 AM

Meat consumption in Sri Lanka continue to rise despite price increases mainly on chicken. We as a nation to a greater extend manage to contain beef consumption. We have privilege with well diversified forming industry though not much productive when compared with developed countries. All over the world specially I think North India there are exceptionally delicious vegetarian menus providing solutions for health issues. Organisations like this can play a pivotal roll in popularising good eating habits. Media institutions should come forward and bring these decisions to the mass.

These are seasonal jokers. First and foremost all these Sinhalese Buddhists need to agree that the largest portion of meat eating and alcohol consumption is by Sinhalese Buddhist including clergy. If Buddhist temples and their priests have been successful in proper preaching without involvement in racism, politics, thuggery, religious intolerance, then Sinhalese would not consume meat not only on silly Mondays but on any day

I don't understand why only on Mondays and in the month of May. It is ridiculous. Did Lord Buddha say so? Also, you can't force your religious beliefs on people from other religions. However, can ask them to show compassion to animals, regardless of religious beliefs.

If this group wishes the Buddhists to adopt to their system it is up to them to decide. But bringing in bogus scientific evidence to substantiate their claims is taking things too far. Humans are omnivorous and their dental structure affirms this. One must concede that over consumption of meat products and especially processed meats are detrimental to human health especially fast foods (junk food). But a balanced diet including regular consumption of unprocessed meat, fish and milk ensures a healthy lifestyle. Vegetarianism is against the natural order given by the Creator of the Universe and leads to detrimental effects to human well being. Perverse scientific findings by dubious vested interests seeking to promote their agendas will not buy support from well informed members of the public

If meat eating causes cancer, then what about other foods like Fast Foods, Sugar, Salt, White Flour, Breads, Deep fried foods, Soft Drinks , Processed Non Veg and Veg , Alcohol etc, all these foods eaten in excess (Sri Lankans eat some of these every day) causes cancer specially digestive system cancer.

    BDK Friday, 27 October 2017 10:46 AM

Lord Buddha preached five precepts for the layman. Refraining from meat is not there. Devdath Thero requested Lord Buddha to ban consumption of meat. But Lord Buddha did not agree. But if these societies promote people to observe the five precepts Sri Lanka will be a much better place. There is 8 precepts or 10 precepts if you are able go beyond the 5 precepts. Even in that refraining from meat is not mentioned. It is even not there in the precepts for the Sangha. Lord Buddhas knowledge is supreme and not comparable to anyone else. So stop questioning it start living by his Dhamma. Please dont attach Buddhism to something which has not been preached by Lord Buddha. If anyone wants to refrain from animal products they have the freedom to do so and they will reap the benefits of good health as science has proven. For what ever the cause do not attach Buddhism if it is not included in the Dhamma. That is distorting Dhamma which is a much greater sin according to Dhamma.

Stop the Meat advertisements in the TV. It makes people greedy and children ask for that particular food after seeing it on the TV screen. Let the people choose what they want to eat. The buddhist monks should set an example and refrain from demanding special food when alms are given. Example is better than precept.

You see large number of animals puppies, rabbits, birds are being caged in animal shops. Please organize to stop that as well.

Bede Fernando Saturday, 28 October 2017 06:18 AM

We should not force anyone on this. We have to think about people those who like to eat meat items. If this will be implemented, meat business will have record sales during April. Good business for Peoples who misuse this opportunity. Those who have refrigerators will buy ample stocks and even sell during May.There are so many things to be addressed and given priority i.e. liquor consumption, which will have bad impact on families, other innocent people.

Actually, it is a meritorious thing to ban meat consumption. At least we can do that. Because animals are too a part of this nature than we do. They have a right to live as well.
