UPFA MP Padma Udayashantha Gunasekara said yesterday plans were afoot to open a night market in the sacred city of Kandy today and urged the Speaker to intervene in stopping it.

He told parliament that Kandy was designated by UNESCO as a historical and sacred city and added that Buddhists all over the world had protested this move.

The MP said the night market was scheduled to occupy Dalada Vidiya and Kotugodella Vidiya.

The Speaker said he had referred the matter to the subject minister following the complaint made by the MP. (Ajith Siriwardana and Yohan Perera)

Buddhism isn't that fragile to be defiled by a night market. But y'all's egos are. Lord Buddha spent nights and days under trees withstanding sun and rain. He saw and preached the inconsistency of life. One of the greatest visionaries in our human civilization. Yet the majority of today's Buddhists are following an alien , egoist concept of ignorance

    ShakeSpear Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:12 PM

What has a night market to do with the Buddhist philosophy? These are jokers who make a living by depicting Buddhism as a religion.

    ron Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:22 PM

I went to it. Completely useless and too loud. Agree with minister

    Modaya Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:43 PM

Opening a market isn't unholy like having a booze shop or slaughter house that most parliamentarians own and indulge in to fill their pockets. Wake up MP.

    das Saturday, 23 February 2019 01:50 PM

So it didn't occur to you protest against night races in Kandy when your gang was in power?

Sarath de Alwis Saturday, 23 February 2019 02:28 PM

We as residents of Kandy are thoroughly disturbed by these nonsense. If some one is interested in have a night market they can have it any ware else. May be in Katugastota or Akurana

    Janaka Saturday, 23 February 2019 02:33 PM

Martin Milton Saturday, 23 February 2019 04:17 PM

What are THE ACTUAL reason/s to justify this ban?? On what grounds are the Buddhists protesting? Please enlighten the public, especially the Buddhist AND non Buddhist public. MM

    Lakminiha Saturday, 23 February 2019 11:01 PM

Is that UNESCO had specified that, anything other than night races would have an adverse effect on the sacred city?

    Sampath Sunday, 24 February 2019 03:50 AM

How come a night Market affect the sacred city. It may help to reduce the traffic in the day time if people to shopping in the night.

    Banda Sunday, 24 February 2019 04:12 AM

    Ranjit Weerakoon Rahjit26@yahoo.com Sunday, 24 February 2019 03:22 PM

Bo, what were you doing when there was night races? were you fast a sleep or were you afraid of white van??

Glenn Todd Sunday, 24 February 2019 07:21 AM

Night Market's are held in most important cities in the world, and are a attraction to local's and tourists. I hope common sense will prevail and any objection overuled , keeping in mind that it also benifits the economy.

Dushantha Hewagamage Sunday, 24 February 2019 07:55 AM

this ministers only want to stop things ..no body in the world protested ..if something good happens they want to stop ..how sri Lanka will developed..how tourism will boost..in hotel's every thing is happening ..they worries only about night market..we really hate politicians..in our country ...

    Jaliya B. Sunday, 24 February 2019 08:07 AM

So it was O.K. for your goons to have midnight car races, open booze mobile markets and pot sales around the Kandy lake but not happy to have a night market there ? Just get the F... out of Kandy town.

    Gamini Sunday, 24 February 2019 08:58 AM

Tourists love night markets all over the world which is a new trends with no harm. These provide cheaper alternatives to the same things that air conditioned shops sell at higher prices and jobs to poorer 'vendors. Most tourists are young and explorative and love other cultures. These old fashioned thinkers should go home. They themselves go to night markets when overseas. They need to get real with the trends if the world as long as there is no harm. He needs to show what harm is done in a city center where no residents live.

Sampath dayawansha Sunday, 24 February 2019 09:36 AM

    Only night races are allowed

    Gamarala Sunday, 24 February 2019 10:43 AM

If last regime continued, to help Night Races, Princesses would have established a Spare Parts Shop for Racing Cars at 'Paththirippuwa'. Why didn't you speak during such times..???

    lanka Sunday, 24 February 2019 03:43 PM

I think the main reason behind this night market is to attract tourists to Kandy since presently, most of the tourists who come to Kandy stay there only for one day. I think the intent of "Night Racing Cars" was this too. The ideal place to open this facility is the old Bogambara prison premises. If somebody wants to keep his/her shop 24 hrs open then, they should have the freedom to do so. A night shift will increase job opportunities too.

Senaka Bandara Sunday, 24 February 2019 04:05 PM

Where u were when there was races in front of maligawa by UNP closing all roads

sanjeewa de saram Monday, 25 February 2019 10:00 AM

How can Kandy residents get disturbed when its in the city where there are no residencies? Kandy city is dead by 8pm and this is a welcome as it gives opportunity for small and medium scale business to improve their business and some social activities for Kandy residents , not to mention the tourists as well. apart from food and other stalls the main attraction was the Kandian dance troupe . How come showing off our kandian heritage affect the UNESCO heritage status?

    ali Monday, 25 February 2019 02:27 PM

Night markets will attract more visitors, local and international. Most of the sacred cities in the world have all shops open throughout the night for the convenience of visitors. Even Colombo is too boring to even for outside visitors after 11PM everything is dead except for night clubs and spas which are less important compared to a pharmacy, other essential service or to buy cooked food. Plau having shops open in the night hours will reduce the traffic on our roads
