46 asylum seekers nabbed in Beruwala

A group of 46 illicit emigrants who were preparing to leave for Australia by sea were arrested by the Beruwala police during a raid in Beruwala town this morning.

The group comprised 29 men, seven women and ten children who were under 14 years of age excepting one who was just two years old. Investigations revealed that the group was from the Eastern Province.

Police carried out the raid at about 2.30am on information gathered from the public. The van used by the group to travel to Beruwala was seized during the raid. (Sarath Siriwardana)
