The government has an ambitious target of achieving 3bn revenue from this increase. But experts belief is that this can go upto 6 Billion since all other taxes and prices have gone up, and thereby leadin to "bonda ona prashnkayak", it is estimated that the demand for liqour will go up no matter the increase in price.

Now, I don't think that so called Rs. 7,500 per family per month formula is valid any more....!!!!
Sura Sond Purawesiya Sunday, 01 April 2012 03:01 PM
Absolutely correct. Then the Government will increase taxes for some other products.

These expectations of income are based on current consumption rates. What happens if consumption is reduced due to escalating cost of living and people start to live on Rs 2500.- a month as per Bandula's Soothray.

There should be more of an increase than this. Let's raise it to 1000% on Cigarets, and booze. And ban it later on. This is promote healthy life style. It will also reduce spending on health care.

I think that to carry out the finanace miniters and secratory's job must be pretty easy. whats the use in increasing revenues by applying heavy tax, They want to promote the country as a tourist spot, yet increase alcohol price. I CAN DO THIS JOB EASILY. INCREASE TAX RATHER THAN IMPROVING EXPORT REVENUES BY ENCOURAING LOCAL MANUFACTURES.
East Saturday, 31 March 2012 07:52 AM
Due to economic crunch if the consumption goes down, then the estimated 3 billion is down the drain....
