A total of 290 prison inmates have been released in view of the Vesak Poya Day, Commissioner General of Prisons, T.M.J.W. Tennakoon said.
He said 228 inmates have been released on the Presidential Pardon while 62 more inmates were released based on their good conduct.
“Prisoners convicted for minor offences, those above the age of 65 and those who failed to pay their fines were among the released inmates," he said.
The Commissioner General said the prisoners who were detained in 30 prisons across the country were released accordingly.
He said that four female prisoners were also among the released prisoners.
“ The 62 prisoners were released under a licence. They would be monitored and they would be sent to jail again if they violate conditions or engage in any crimes,” he said.
The released inmates have been issued with curfew passes to reach their homes.(DSB)
