While stating that it was wrong to appoint defeated candidates to the national list, leader of the National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) Ven. Maduluwawe Sobitha Thera said yesterday the only solution to prevent such moves was to enact a new constitution.

Ven. Sobitha Thera said the current constitution allowed for defeated candidates to enter parliament through the national list, and added that such loopholes should be amended and a new constitution introduced.

“It is wrong to appoint defeated candidates to the national list. Our constitution is full of shortcomings. We need a new constitution without shortcomings like the preferential voting system,” he said.

The Thera said the UNP had taken a policy decision not to appoint defeated candidates to the national list.

Then whats the point in having a Election and spending govt money and sending dumbos back to Parliament .. it does not make sense ...

Defeated MPs were appointed because MS wanted them for his Yahapalanaya. Who is Sobhita thero to dictate terms MS

Nish I feel sorry for your mentality. Regardless of your comment the Thera will be given his due place for all his effort.

Sooner you will realize that you were also used and not needed anymore.. But when we all realize that we were used to fulfill some individual agendas, we all will left at a no other option scenario..

    Christopher Saturday, 22 August 2015 06:12 PM

Rev Thero is absolutely correct. Those who were defeated should be at home. The constitution needs to be changed. Further there should be regulations preventing members switching sides.

Solomon Perera Saturday, 22 August 2015 06:32 PM

It must be embedded in the new constitution that horse trading is not permitted. If a person leaves a party s/he loses the seat and a new election has to be held.

Symptoms of yahapalanaya coming out gradually for the selfish gain of president. who loves country no body knows now..

Rufus Norton Saturday, 22 August 2015 04:10 PM

The very concept of election is going to the people for them to select the candidates. Those who did nothing for the electorate or were corrupt were thrown out by the ballot. But this so-called national list allows them to creep back and blast their fog-horns in Parliament to impress the TV channels.

    johan Saturday, 22 August 2015 07:49 PM

They cannot be called as defeated, because they contested and fell short of the margin,to be elected. But comparing the other UPFA National list members, these people are somewhat better than them.

Rejected by the people should not be appointed. Well said Rev.Sir

    indrajith Sunday, 23 August 2015 05:29 AM

what a lame feedback from Sobhitha Thero. You are simply trying to cover your own skin by making a statement from pansiyapans jathaka. Where have that fighter Ven.Sobhitha gone?????

    sujeeva Sunday, 23 August 2015 06:56 AM

Its a fair to consider why some of them have lost, simply for being in the side of MS and MR campaigned not to vote them. Duminda s was an exceptional case to be elected.

    jena Sunday, 23 August 2015 07:58 AM

UNP also has one defeated MP from Puttalam district in their national list.

Of the rejected candidates one a professor was trying to impeach Maithree, another also a professor, was sure MR would win and was talking about abolishing the Executive Presidency. Should these chaps have been included in the National List ?

    Bala Saturday, 22 August 2015 03:07 PM

Rejected bunch - as if the UPFA elected bunch is better - it is worse than anything imaginable - all the crooks.

    kan Saturday, 22 August 2015 11:18 AM

They are winners in defeat, so let them enjoy.

Lalith Wijeweera Saturday, 22 August 2015 11:27 AM

THE ENTIRE COUNTRY IS DISSATISFIED OF UPFA NATIONALIST LIST.

    Yapa Saturday, 22 August 2015 12:17 PM

Ven.Sobitha has not realized that this rejected bunch will be responsible for changing the constitution and taking decisions for the good of the people.Voters rejected them since their presence in parliament is not acceptable.I personally feel the President fooled us..

    Bala Saturday, 22 August 2015 12:17 PM

Please understand the practical aspects of a game. In cricket you are not out even plumb if the ball is outside leg stump. In politics you have to take some unwelcome steps in the greater good - true SLFP must build up and throw out MR gang of thieves and you need help of faithfuls to do that. The end justify the means.

    Justicia Saturday, 22 August 2015 12:24 PM

Rev Sir - Please continuously bring up such issues so that MS will take note. Also suggest other requirements to be included in the new constitution. LIKE IN PREVIOUS SUCH ISSUES, CANNOT THE DM RUN A COLUMN IN THE PAPER AND PUBLISH READER;s SUGGESTIONS FOR INCLUSION IN THE CONSTITUTION.

    siva Saturday, 22 August 2015 02:05 PM

When the list of ministers is out some of the defeated candidates will also be ministers. Rajapakse still at work

    aslam Saturday, 22 August 2015 02:36 PM

There are people who had lost but should in the parliament eg. Mahinda samarasinghe. There are people who won but should not enter the parliament. Eg. Pavithra. Wanniarachchi.

This political fiasco will soon end when the kaduwa drops and many Sri Lankans realise that the long hard road out of poverty still lies a head.

    Suran Saturday, 22 August 2015 03:23 PM

Now we can see. Will they listen to you?

    Rajan Saturday, 22 August 2015 03:28 PM

What abut Hon. Ex minister Mervyn Silva

    Li Saturday, 22 August 2015 03:33 PM

Hamuduruwane, whatever in the constitution, your great leader should have a "mole kalandak" not to appoint rejected candidates through the national list. Otherwise how can he be the president of Sri Lanka. Nikan ugurata hora beheth kanne nethiva, ahandako kelinma Sirisenagen. You all are misleading Sri Lankan people.

Nadi Karunaratne Saturday, 22 August 2015 03:37 PM

Good governance requires people of talent and integrity who have acquired ample real world experience. The new parliament comprises too many of the usual suspects, almost exclusively men. The national lists gave an opportunity to infuse some fresh blood and have been used by one side at least to throw a lifeline to defeated hacks who should be ashamed to come forward having been rejected by the very people whom they claim to represent. The rejects represent themselves alone. Without fresh talent it is hard to see how a radically changed political culture can emerge.

    M.Z.M Haseen Saturday, 22 August 2015 03:40 PM

I totally agree with Ven Sobitha thero, these MRs thieves should be kicked out , if the people rejected u then why appoint these crooks, will they also receive a pay, its not fair, totally unethical.

Ukkun Putha Saturday, 22 August 2015 03:59 PM

There will be more to come
