Attack on Priyantha Sirisena: suspect surrenders

Priyantha Sirisena, the brother of President Maithripala Sirisena was hospitalised with serious injuries after he was assaulted by an unknown person at Hathare Ela area in Polonnaruwa.

It was reported that Mr. Sirisena had been attacked near a garage in the area at around 7. 00 p.m. and had been rushed to the Polonnaruwa Hospital.

He was later air lifted to Colombo.

Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara said a suspect called ‘Lakmal’ who is a friend of Mr. Sirisena had been arrested after he was surrendered to the Bakamuna Police over the alleged assault.

He said a personal dispute may have led to the attack. (Darshana Sanjeewa & K. G. Karunaratne)

Air lifting patients frm hospital to hospital is an accepted practice in any country.The decision should be taken by medical professionals and not by politicians.

This is one of the most barbaric country in the world. You can continuously hear the preaching of Buddhism in every nook and corner of the Island Nation including the Private Bus services. But rate the of crime is consistently on the increase. Killing a person by chopping the head with an Axe and that being a brother of the President of Sri Lanka is an insult to this country, clearly indicates the Socio -cultural standard of our people. Stringent laws need to be introduced urgently to correct this menace which has become a social trend.

Only in this country if a person is seriously wounded and if he happens to be a sibling of a higher authority that they have the privilege of been airlifted to a bigger hospital, whereas in other countries that is not a qualification medical help is always ready at hand to be airlifted if necessary at any given time taking into consideration the seriousness of the situation. Also our media people always put these siblings in the lime light so that is publicity by the media, why cant the media do something better.
