MR's security in jeopardy despite Govt. claims: MR’s office

While rejecting Minister Rajitha Senaratne’s claims that 21 vehicles had been assigned to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Mr. Rajapaksa’s office said all the vehicles assigned to his security detail were withdrawn and that has jeopardized his security.

Mr. Rajapaksa’s office said only 6 vehicles had been provided to the former president.

Issuing a statement Mr. Rajapaksa’s office said even though 108 soldiers and 105 policemen had been assigned to the former president’s security detail, there were no vehicles to transport them.

The statement added that the lack of vehicles to transport Mr. Rajapaksa’s security personnel had jeopardized the former president’s security.

Cabinet spokesman minister Rajitha Senaratne said at a press conference yesterday that the former president had been provided with two high security vehicles, one ‘dummy’ vehicle, one Defender jeep, one Toyota Land Cruiser and one double cab.

He further said that 108 soldiers and 105 policemen have been assigned for the protection of the former president and that these security personnel have been provided with three double cabs, one Land Cruiser, two vans, one bus and eight motorcycles for their use.

So many vehicles and so many security persons for an ex president when in his time he did not give Chandrika anything although he was in that position because of her. Not that I am a big fan of the former dictator, but one cannot ignore the fact that many LTTE sympathizers who harbor a grudge against him for crushing terrorism may try to take a potshot now that security in the country is relaxed. Therefore allow security professionals to assess his threat level and recommend and implement adequate security

For a retired stateman, I think the number of personnel provided is excessive and six vehicles is more than adequate. How many more he wants? A dozen white vans? Some Sherman Tanks? Another 500 commandos? And why does he want such a security outfit? He must realise that people rejected him at one of the fairest of elections and accept the verdict.

Rajitha is a dentist who opens his mouth at the wrong time.He will jump to any side to be in power for his own sake. In Janurary nearly 50% of the people were behind him and now more than 75%. Do the numbers people, 108 105 a total of 213 over 3 shifts is 71 per shift. This will be divided over guarding his residence and escorts. If he has 50 escorting him the 6 vehicles some carrying 8 others 12 are more than sufficient
