The Elections Secretariat has registered 541,131 voters for postal voting which begins Tuesday for the January 8 presidential election, a senior official of the Elections Secretariat said today.
Additional Elections Commissioner U. Amaradasa said postal voting will be held Tuesday (23) and Wednesday (24) with December 30 set apart as an additional day for those who were unable to cast their votes on the first two days.
He said 52,419 postal voting applications had to be rejected for various reasons such as incomplete information, non-entitlement or applications submitted after the deadline.
The Elections Department has handed over the polling cards to the Postal Department for delivery under registered cover to eligible postal voters who include public servants, police and armed forces personnel, those selected for election duty and essential services during the election period, he said.
